I have been smoking Smokin Joe's Little Cigars now for quite some time, and at $8.75 a carton, very affordable. As of April 1st, $9.67 will be added in taxes which will make the carton cost over $18. Now, I cant remember, and I dare anyone here to think of any product EVER that has more than doubled in price in one shot. Dont think it has ever happened. Apparently, Obammy gave out all this stimulus money and is now trying to get it back by taxing the shit out of tobacco. These taxes apply on all tobacco products with the most being applied to Little Cigars and Roll Your Own, but major taxes also on major brands. Oh well, many of you may not smoke and think it good this is happening, but lets see what will be taxed next. Beer? I can see that coming next. Add $5 to each 12 pack. Where will it stop? Oh well, thats your Obammy at work.
I think we hijack trailer trucks carrying tobacco, set fire to them and the Tobacco warehouses.. So it dont really matter to me. I know where some warehouses are now, they never had the levels of security they do today.. Not that it matters .. You cameras dont fire lasers.. And they cant see ninjas..
I quit smoking cigarettes about a year and a half ago, so it doesn't really affect me but I still don't agree with it. It seems when it comes to taxation, smokers have always been targeted as a group. It seems a little discriminative to me. I don't agree with the bailouts either, but that's just me. Struggling taxpayers shouldn't have to use their money to save a multi-billion dollar company in the dumps so the suits at the top can have hopes of continuing to make their upper class profits.
I give this country another 3 to 5 years before we implode, the suit's & polichickens are just trying to grab what they can while they can. We should take it as a form of leading by example. I'm with orison but I'm more for burning the warehouses 1 cigarette at a time Organized crime syndicates have nothing on washington when it comes to strong arm tactics & racketeering. The U.S. fought off British Rulers for a mere 33% Tax in exchange for which we now pay over 38% of our overall income in some form of Tax to the State & Feds (Income / Sales / Inheritance etc.) All I do these days is non-for-profit volunteer work
$9 a carton? Shit. It's $9 a pack in Canada. S'about time the price caught up with the times and not remain a deflated price of $9 per carton in my view. And who knows, maybe this just may be the motivation you need to quit.
For the record, getting people addicted to drugs and then charging more for it is how the drug world functions. So, if you're naive enough to buy into that kind of system, then maybe you deserve to pay through the nose. No offense, just playing devil's advocate.
Most of the taxes on cigarettes go to fund education, which I think is really stupid. You raise the tax, people smoke less, less money is collected, education loses money. Can't really use taxes from one product to fund one thing. It just doesn't work.
The tax is nothing new, they tried this last year, it was part of a bill to fund children's health care, Bush vetoed it, Obama said he'd sign it, and that he did, and you're lucky, the taxes already took effect here
I only hope taxes get beyond my means so that i have more incentive to quit than a slow agonizing death
america is fighting wars on behalf of foreign powers that have taken over your government you only need to look at the talking heads that have been drafted into the government. of course they are going to raise taxes. its only going to get worse stop fighting people in the middle east and enjoy cheaper cigarettes its that simple. which do you love more war or ciggies??
Now when you stop and re-read your post, ya' see why that get's a bit tricky in practice? T par T :cheers2:
a pack of imported from america, genuine marlboro reds in the phillipines cost $0.40. stick that in your pipe and smoke it.. or just grow your own..
Damn Zilla, FUCK! I already bpay $6 for a pack of Camel Crush and it's only $4.25 it's $6 after taxes. Cigs are really gonna start hurting my pocket after the tax increase.
I have been running into a lot of folks locally who are quitting cigs in favor of pot. One guy quit his prescribed pain meds (which he needs sometimes but the doc told him it's either pain meds or pot and not both) AND tobacco so he could afford to keep smoking pot. If you are a confirmed smoker, check out buying tobacco from the reservations! Indians, so far, are not required to pay the taxes on tobacco as long as they are native american brands, so the cost is a lot less. I've got a poll going in the marijuana forum about if you are a smoker would you quit cigs or pot first. I'm curious how the REST of the world thinks about this, besides this little corner, so vote if ya have a mind to...
In Ohio cigarillos are $1 each (double the price) and I hear packs of cigarettes are getting sold at $7+ a pack. I don't personally smoke (even though I do get the 'rillos) but that is absolutely outrageous.
In California there's no savings in buying from the Reservations, the Tax board comes after you anyway. I am wondering if they are basing the budgets of these programs on projected revenues from this new tax, what happens when people are priced out of the market and can no longer purchase them? Who funds those programs when the projected revenues don't add up? Kind of like Wall Street trading on margin, and we've all seen how well that's worked.
It's a foolish tax.I mean, I quit smoking a few years ago,but I'm against these types of taxes. They only hurt the poor and middle classes. They do not discourage smoking for the most part, and for the rich price is never an object. If they suddenly doubled the taxes on alcohol would it make people drink less?No.----BTW There are "mail order" Indian Reservations that I think are still tax free.
Back when I used to smoke I tried ordering "Seneca brand" cigarettes from a mail order indian reservation one time.I forget what company it was, but I got them a few days later in the mail(and I'm in Hawaii),and they are pretty good cigarettes IMO.I just took a quick look online and noticed a few companies selling a carton(10 packs) of 'Seneca' cigarettes for about 15 dollars.Add postage and it's maybe $22.--If one decides to do this only deal with a company with a toll free number.
