It has some virus but the chance of a common computer user catching one is much more rare.

Because the comment I quoted, was a blatant lie. Ie: dude’s trollin or ignorant, and trying to give advice, both of which I find funny…

The only way to get a Linux virus is if you graphically log in as root all the time. Honest to truth and I'm the last one to lie about this stuff.

You can not get a Linux virus unless you explicitly install it. Unlike Windows that just needs an Internet connection.

And you'd be surprised at how many "omg I just installed Linux now I'm uber leet users" do stupid things just like that.

    Microsoft Windows - 200 bucks
Antivirus - 70 bucks (for a really crappy one)
    anti-spyware/malware - 50 bucks (for a half-ass barely passable program)
to have all that garbage hogging your system ... hilarious

    Linux - free
Antivirus for linux - free (if it even exists) (hell, viruses are almost non existant)
anti-spyware/malware for linux - non existant
to have your computer running 10 years after your friends go through 12 each and laughing at them for wasting time and money - priceless

to wish to be best friends with the addreall assasin guy - please?

buying a mac (or running Linux) decreases the risk of viruses

but the most important factor is the user
a very careless user can infect a mac
it's just easier to be careless on windows

I ran AVG for awhile until I found that Avira catches stuff that AVG does not. I have been running Avira for 2 years now and am very satisfied. One thing though, when Avira does it's full scan, it tends to bog down your processor, so that can be a pain at times.

I'll second that advice. I have one Windows XP computer, and one Ubuntu 8.10 computer, and for the Windows machine, those are 3 great (and free!) choices.

I switched from AVG to Avast! due to Avast! being more piratey. And it seemed to use less system resources, all that blah blah.

As far as the ubuntu machine, it's a really easy switch for a Windows user to go to linux with. It "feels" like windows just enough to be comfortable, and it just feels good to be penguin powered all around.

    AVG is only virus protection.

Ad-aware is what you need to get the spyware removed. It's free as well.

Zone Alarm (Firewall), AVG(Antivirus), Spybot Search and Destroy, and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (Anti Malware Adware) all free. I put them on all my friends computers when they call me to clean up their screwed up units. CC Cleaner is always a good tool to have in your tool box.
    http://www.ccleaner.com/

Malwarebyte is especially good and has removed some difficult worms and trojans.

Another tip if you know you are infected update all your definitions, disconnect from the internet, then turn off System Restore before you run scans and try to clean your unit. It will save a lot headaches with reinfection notices from your scans. They find the old copies in the image files for the SR. After all scans come back clean make sure you turn it on again through the Control Panel.

After I think everything is clean I connect again and go to TrendMicro and run a free online scan. It sometimes picks up some leftovers.

When that scan comes back clean I go into System Restore again and manually set a clean restore point.

And to finish off run a complete defrag.

Say it again. It's been the only thing I could find that would remove some pernicious trojans and worms. Spybot, Adaware and AVG might find them but they were unable to remove them.

everyone is posting about anti-virus but nobody has mentioned prevention.

if you work out of a limited account instead of an administrator account you can prevent about %90 of spyware/viruses because even if you get an infected file it wont be able to install itself.

now if you add a free virus protection solution like AVG or something, you are pretty secure at this point.

also for adware, use less common browsers. most exploits are coded to attack internet explorer vulnerabilities. use firefox or some other browsers instead.

the number one way i see people getting viruses is p2p like limewire etc, and porn.

so to work around this dont use p2p software, if you want to download stuff try safer sources, like Thepiratebay.org or other websites where people test the uploaded software. and if you want to watch porn always click no on pop ups or just use one of those free websites like porntube.com or redtube.com etc.

if you take these procautions and use a free anti virus and antispyware you can be just as safe or safer than someone who payed a shitload of money for shitty norton antivirus.

by the way, this is just FYI, when i was more into coding/testing out viruses worms, we would always test it out on NORTON first. the reason? it has been shown, and anyone with experience will agree with me here, that NORTON was the most popular antivirus and also the easiest to bypass.

    I use Linux
I go to the dodgiest of sites and never fear any viruses or malware.
I also employ a large network with several servers and clients, some of which run Linux, I never worry about them. I do worry about the XP clients some times. Thats why I use Nod32 that is simply the best. Norton is a joke. PIFTS.exe anyone...
