1. guns n roses i never understood why more people don't like them. in fact, i have come across a number of people who hate them. how? they are fuckng awesome. lots of the lesser known songs are so ignored. 2. Queen. everyone likes them, yet no one loves them. i dont think i have ever heard someone say queen is their favorite band
I have to say that I hate G&R. It's not really the whole band that I hate, just Axel. I don't like Queen either. When I think of underrated artists, I think of Donovan, The James Gang, Roger Mcguinn, etc.
I've never been into GnR. I remember when I was about 11, everyone was raving about them at school, but I just didn't see the appeal, and I never really have. They're ok in the karaoke sense. Queen are one of those bands that don't really need to be anyone's favourite, they're just all round good. I'm going to say Missy Elliot, just because I like her and think she writes good lyrics, whereas most people just think she's fat.
Missy Elliott ain't fat... She's PHAt... And props to you for acknowledging "MissDemeanor" Wilco (this band is in like every one of my posts these days) is definitely deserving of "under-rated" status. One of the GREAT American bands currently producing music, and no one knows about them. Ben Harper gets some press, but he'd be deserving of more... Gillian Welch is writing all this fantastic music that sounds about 100 years old... Amazing! I don't know... That's who I have to offer at this point...
haha, Guns 'N Roses were huge, bro. They weren't at all under-rated. People who were into hard rock loved them, it was pretty much invariable. Axel's voice is hard to deal with at first. It's an aquired taste, kind of like Mick Jaggar. I couldn't stand him for a long time in the early 90s, and 5 years later I was paying $300.00 to see the Stones in standing room only. Queen was under-rated in America, but they were GIANTS in England and most of Europe and Asia. Queen is by far the best operatic rock bands to ever exist, and honestly, not to be an asshole, but Americans are generally much too lame to know good music when it comes across the sea. I guess "good" is a subjectivity, so let us just say that Americans can't seem to stand anything technically complex. It's annoying to live here, but I didn't like England or Japan enough to live there. lol I like a lot of classic rock (fairly simple usually), like a lot of Americans, but an American wouldn't know true technical ability if it bit them in the ass. The Japanese know technical ability, and respect it. Maybe this is why Symphony X is still selling big there. I'd say that the most under-rated band in America was "The Firm". People hated them for some reason. I thought they were awesome and really unique! Most ska bands are really under-rated too, probaby because they are associated with punk. The number one most under-rated band in America was "Extreme". Nuno Bettencourt is a great guitar player, and the songs were sometimes hilarious, as well as really creative. I would say Porcupine Tree, or other obscure progressive bands, but they're really more obscure than under-rated. All obscure bands are under-rated, or more aptly, not really rated much at all.
Uncle Tupelo. UT split to form Wilco and Son Volt. Son Volt's "Trace" is a pretty incredible album, if you're into that kind of sound. Gillian Welch is great! Glad somebody else knows about her! Neko Case has one hell of a voice...edgy and haunting.
MusicMan19... Your excellent post would be better served by not generalizing about American listeners, as there are always exceptions to the rule. The same could be said about British listeners, or Russian listeners... We all have our quirks, and odd tastes that make our collections singular. Granted, American "Pop" Culture produces tons of bubble-gum music that is repugnant and not fit for "export." Yet, our mass media sales-driven music industry is always looking for "flashes in the pan" to sell albums quickly. So, you're right, in many instances... But generalizations are still dangerous... I gave you positive rep for one of your posts earlier today, so I hope you will see that I'm not trying to be a troll... Just reminding you that some ridiculous Americans (like yourself) on this message board are fully capable of understanding what is good, or technically challenging, or interesting sounding, despite our bastardized, American DNA... And I say this with a snicker...It doesn't have to "bite me in the ass" for me to see technical brilliance or creative exploration.
I wouldn't consider GnR underrated... I remember there was a time when all my friends loved them And they only really came out with one good album, 'Apetite for Destruction', all the rest sucked....
I find Dire Straits to be quite underrated, and Mark Knopfler is one of rock'n'roll's most underrated guitarists.
Blind Melon and just for shits and giggles (and going along with the 90s music theme) Presidents of the United States of America. I agree with those who said Donovan. Donovan was an amazing artist. Phil Ochs and 13th Floor Elevators also deserve to be mentioned here. And Guns n Roses were monsterously huge back in the day; they definately were not under rated. And the Beatles...omg, why weren't they famous????
i'm a huge GnR fan, and never once did i think they were underrated... they were given the pedistal that they deserved in 80/90's rock era, they were always makin the covers of magazines, always in the news and always much talked about. Presidents Of The United States Of America are an underrated band, their music was highly creative and pure craziness
gnR underrated, you gotta be kidding right?? when I was going to high school, everybody loved them. it was infectious. if anything, they are overrated. Queen too, thats all you hear on classic rock radio.
Queen isn't over-rated. They can't be. You can't over-rate a band like Queen. It's an impossibility. Invariably, no matter how high you rate them, they'll deserve better.
j.j. cale is great! Nick Drake and Leo Kottke are some underrated artists that I can think of. They are both really talented as well.
They just recently (August or September, one of those) released a new album after about 10 years of hearing nothing from these guys. I have to admit, though, that I'm not feeling much from it; it can't really compare to their old stuff. Don't me wrong, I like a few of the songs on it, but some songs are terrible, which I'm not used to hearing from these guys.
I'm going to go both ways (yes like a bi-sexual0 Underated: Sublime, The Bloodhound Gang, Mindless Self Indulgence, Foo Fighters, Hootie and the Blowfish, Vanilla Ice (newer shit not 80's, his rock is great) Overated: Yellowcard, Good Charlotte, Michael Jackson, Prince, U2 (2 good songs), any pop singer within the last 10 years Most Overrated assholes EVER: The Beatles
Didn't they do that horrible mating song? That sucked. Assholes? Yeah, they really sucked. I can understand people not liking them, but when people say stuff like this, it just goes to show their stupidity.
