why does it hve to be a debate?
in school wernt you givin a subject and told to argue for one side or the outher wether you belived in it or not?
it devides it serves no purpose! but to devide!
ohh but that is what your masters want, isnt it! so it does serve a purpose dosnt it?
so what is a PROPER debate?
    what function does it serve?

i would have to say that discusion would serve man better!
    would it not?

Division is an unavoidable product of human nature. :D

    Just kidding.

flmkpr, I think we blend: Debate, discussion and argument all into one around here.

Debate can be one way to show that there is more than one way to look at an argument. Most of us choose a belief and think people with another belief are wrong or dumb. But, when millions of people hold a view other than me, I realize they are probably not dumb. There are flaws in my belief system and merits in theirs.
Now, that means when I come to a discussion (better than a debate) I am more open to other views if the others are open also, the discussion will be more productive. Not just groups of people that know they are right and trying to prove it or shout down the others.
I think debate may be a tool to help people learn how to consider the merits of differing viewpoints.

Also, It can help some consider their beliefs in more depth. To prepare for a debate, you need to consider the weaknesses in your belief and try to find some way to counter them. Again, if you are open, you may realize that the belief you hold is not truth, but has both strength and weakness, just like the other side.

Discussion is better, but debate can be a learning tool.

Well said. In schools it's used as a way to open discussion and promotes critical thinking even on issues with which you agree or disagree. There is very little in life that is strictly black or white.

Debate isn't bad, it's truth. A Greek god worshipper who had thought up of 10,000,000 reasons why his religion is true is debating out his religion. When he finds out he was follow an empty mythology, he is closer to truth than most. By weeding out what is not move closer to what IS.
