Warren Wilson College in the Swannanoa Valley in Asheville, North Carolina.
It has a triad program, which consists of academics, service and work.
As a student, before you graduate, you must complete at least 100 hours of community service. During the week, you also work for the school. The jobs vary, but basically the students run the school electric crews, farm crews, custodian crews, carpentry.... and just about anything you can think of which you need to function a small community.
It is as close to a commune you can get without it actually being one.
Also, the campus is absolutely beautiful, anytime of year, and it is in the middle of a valley, surrounded by forest and rivers, and hiking trails.
It also has a fully functioning organic farm, also run by the faculty and students.
I went there for my freshman year of college, and absolutely loved it, but I dropped out and now I'm just vagabonding the globe.
But certainly a good "hippie" school if there ever was one. Cheers!

AbsoLUTELY go to UVM! I was born in Burlington and now I live 20 minutes away. A good chunk of the graduating class from my high school goes to UVM each year, once you get a taste of Vermont you never want to leave it. The city itself is beautiful and very relaxed. There's always something interesting and creative going on, the music scene rocks, don't know if you blaze but that's top grade too, the people are insanely friendly and laid back, and the weather is breathtaking. Oh, and it's great for academics. I've got my app. filled out already, early admission is due Nov. 1st!

UVM is a good school, but don't stress about admissions if you're a generally well-rounded student. Diverse transcript, good scores, presentable background, and you're probably good to go. Haha if bud is on your priority list, you've found the right school. Ohhh Vermont...

I don't know if it has been mentioned already; but Ithaca University and Cornell are EXTREMELY liberal schools and they're right in new york :) Ithaca itself is one of the most progressive communities I've ever lived in~ I HIGHLY recommend checking it out
