Read his book True Hallucinations. Absolutely mindblowing! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxDNeEHDrrM This is an excellent 50 part audio version Anyone read this?
It's old and everybody knows about Terrence McKenna. Personally, I think he's a crackpot, but he's got a few good ideas.
I appreciate the link, cookiemonster. I haven't read that book yet, but I'm going to (or listen to it, that is ). Have you ever been to Terence McKenna land? http://deoxy.org/mckenna.htm#sword I'm slowly making my way through it, starting on the audio/video section. I think Terence McKenna was way ahead of his time. We should be talking MORE about his ideas, not less, especially as we approach 2012. What he says is so spot on and rings so true. The more I listen, the more I'm blown away. I personally hope there will be some sort of "singularity" event in 2012. Can you imagine experiencing the most profound moment not only in human history but time itself? That would be something else.
That would be incredible if there was some sort of singular event in 2012. To early to tell what, if anything, will happen yet. To say hes a crackpot is ridiculous considering were in the psychedelic forums, and he was practically the spokesperson for psychedelics. Hes probably had more experience with them than anyone and is certianly one of the best thinkers of the century. Just listen to some of his talks and you can tell the mans a genius. Sure he's wierd and may seem like a crack pot at first glance but hell everythings wierd. Dmt is wierd, our entire situation of being on this rock circulating a nuclear fireball is wierd. Reality is getting more and more like science fiction so get used to it people its only going to get more quirky
his work related to psychedelics earned him a reputation for this more than he seemed to want. after a while he'd really often rather get a good chance to discuss other things that interested him. anyway, leary and kesey were also "spokespeople" for for psychedelics, and both of them did more harm than good. now i have a lot more respect for mckenna than leary or kesey, but some of his ideas are VERY out there, and to call him a crackpot isnt invalid or unwarranted, despite my rather high opinion of him
but crackpot theories is totally fair. look at his timewave zero stuff. its interesting, but cooky as hell
i'm happy i'm home for spring break and can download torrents without the university noticing. i'm getting back the psychedelic torrent (or rather, the bulk of it that i liked, i'm skipping a few things that i dont care about) which has a ton of mckenna stuff in it - though i did neglect just a small handful of terrence mckenna files from it for those of you unfamiliar with the torrent i'm talking about, here it is: http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/3701092/Psychedelic_Torrent its a wealth of good media files regarding drugs of all manners. but a lot of them are purely entertainment, and some presented as scientific (that "what the bleep do we know" thing) are pure, unadulterated bullshit. but the vast bulk of the stuff is either good and informative or very entertaining. i'll be happy to have it back - last time i downloaded the whole thing, and it took a couple weeks. this time i started downloading yesterday, and already have 43% of what i'm downloading finished unrelated, i've also gotten lots of other good things....a few really awesome movies (the holy mountain, my neighbor totoro, nausicaa) and some music (can, quasimoto) and probably more porn than i need anyway, i'm a happy camper, lots of cool stuff:cheers2: probably going to take some mushrooms this week, too:hat:
every philosopher has a few ideas that are too far out there for his time period the greatest part of mckenna wasn't in any of his singular theories like timewave, but just in the simple insights and advices he could offer about the subjective experience of psychedellics. He could english psychedellic intuitions better than anyone else I think.
gross exageration i think what you mean is every GREAT philosopher. and though i respect the guy, the timewave zero shit is just stupid.
all i can say is mckenna has had some deep trips, and learned A LOT from HIS OWN psychedelic experiences..just like we each learn from our trips, except hes found a common ground in people tripping as a whole...common occurences in peoples trips..and has theorized some really cool shit about it
i agree some of his ideads are out there. but his book "the food ofthe gods" is amazing. and I like him more than leary or kesey b/c mckenna is more about expanding everyones knowledge. I truelly, and wholeheartedly believe we as a human race need an evolution rather than another revolution. to put it simply theres no more opposable thumbs comin down the pipe. its time to expand our minds. and as he puts it "psychedlics are the only savior left for this planet."
