oh man, i used to have this awesome pair of boots from hot topic. i don't normally get stuff from there, but these where frikkin awesome. they were big, thigh high thick souled buckled up boots. but the great thing about them was that instead of buckling up the four big buckles, it just zipped up the side. they looked AWESOME. but they weren't worth the $75 i paid for them because they fell apart after only four months. the heals were too heavy and seperated from the cloth part. i was so so so sad. moral of the story: don't buy shoes from a trendy store!!!

    The Crocs sound nice.
Last winter I shelled out the money for a pair of Ugg boots. I adore them. If you can, they are worth the money. I'm also a fan of reg. Crocs (not because they are trendy somewhat or because of the ugliness which for whatever reason makes them "cool") but because they are uber comfy and not too terrible on the wallet.

If you want to spend money on shoes, check out New Rock boots.

The boots in Hot Topic are basically just shitty New Rock knock-offs. My boyfriend has a pair of New Rock boots that he got for $250. Pricey, yes, but that was when he was 15 years old and now he's 22 and he hasn't owned a single other pair of shoes the entire time. He still wears them every day.

(Every day that he wears shoes that is, because I've turned him on to barefeet for the most part.)

I wear these Ugg-type things called Emu's in the winter. I'm right in the middle of Ontario and we get about 4 feet during winter, and I have a 20 minute walk through a field to get to my bus. These things are butt ugly and super-trendy, but I love mine b/c they have wooden toggles and I have rly small feet so I can pass for a cute conformist(...), but are made of real wool and real leather and keep my feet super warm and comfy. Plus they just do NOT break, so they were worth the $150 I paid for them.

As for knock off Birks, I got these leather things from this army surplus store downtown called, Mountain Joe's Boots or something random like that, they are Just like the birkenstock clogs, but they are cheaper and just as ugly and just as comfy, and maybe even more durable. I stuck them in the oven for a few minutes and then put em on my feet to make the personalized indents. They are SOOO comfy.

Believe it or not, I haven't owned shoes this winter or last. Some people think it's impossible to go through winter w/o shoes, but the truth is... if you try it, you would be amazed at how comfortable it is. You can't stand outside for hours or anything, but just going from home to your car to a building is no problem at all. My last pair of flips broke 2 years ago, and I never got the urge to buy any shoes...lol

for those of us who walk in snow rather than burn oil, a decent, durable pair of snow boots is required.
I actually scored my new (first in 10 years) pair at a Target.
rest of the time I'm in Chacos with socks (assuming it is a between snows period).
I also own a pair of vegan Earth shoes for job interviews and the like.

I hope you don't think it's un-hippielike to drive a car. Here is PA, it would be nearly impossible to get around to the places I need to go without one.

I think that saying it is OK to be barefoot in your winter climate, because you are in a car can sound silly. Imagine if you read someone saying "I go without a coat, but I drive everywhere."
Of course, I'm hearing a lot of self-righteous barefooters in my head. NOT saying that's you by any means, but that's why it sounded so funny to read it.

And my neighbors say they cannot get around without a car. I get all across the metro, up to Boulder, I could even get to a ski hill on public transport.
When it come to use of resources we all have to make our own decisions. I opted for walking and boots.:)
    Does that make sense?
