DENVER – One Colorado woman's love for tofu has been judged X-rated by state officials. Kelly Coffman-Lee wanted to tell the world about her fondness for bean curd by picking certain letters for her SUV's license plate. Her suggestion for the plate: "ILVTOFU." But the Division of Motor Vehicles blocked her plan because they thought the combination of letters could be interpreted as profane.

    *snorts*

I had to read that at least a dozen times before I figured out what people might have mistaken it for. Somebody's got WAY too much time on their hands - or a really dirty mind, I'm not sure which.

yep. you should see the full list.
My office (writers with gutter minds of our own) can't figure out why some of them are there.
I happened to meet Kelly and her family yesterday at Veg fest (surprise) She had the plate made into a T-shirt. She's something of a celebrity in Colorado.
I hope to get an interview with her. If I do, I'll send along a link.

Oh, and the plate she already has is one of Colorado's "Respect Life" plates that came from Columbine.

    That's cool...

I just can't imagine why they would waste the money on it really (the censoring issue). Even if she had meant it to have a double meaning, or meant for it to be what they fear it does, what does it matter? It doesn't say it, it is just a collection of letters grouped together.
think of the possibilities that they have to consider...

FUNLVR, is this a happy person are a mean racist?

It's all such an absurd thing to spend tax dollars on.....

personally, I think vanity plates are a waste, but at least no triple K plate is driving around.
THe list should just be a red flag, but the list as I saw it did not have FU (stand alone) as an entry (LSD, POT, KKK, FCK were)

red flag as in it pops up and says, btw, your plate could also be taken to mean this??

pot is on the list... *shakes head*... lol

so when harry potter goes to apply for the plate POTTER, he is told that weed terrorists can't have personalized plates... lol

I just think it's sad. License-plate police. Who'd have thunk? I mean you can have a bumper sticker that says any ol' thing you want... and I know *I* have seen more than my share of offensive stickers! But your license plate MUST be polite & acceptable? sheesh

as a car-free person, I found some humor in this.
She's Vegan for a slate of (good) reasons (talked to her at Veg Fest) and the environment was one.
Ok, so you drive? (granted, it isn't a huge vehicle, if I recall--and it is fuzzy)
maybe I'm just crabby since I get to stand in the rain at the train station so much recently. :p
