I Was talking to this guy who had 4 year old dreads and he said he cuts his odwn the middle when he feels he wants sthem thinner. Sooo i'v done this to about 3 or 4 thicker dreads and the results have been great Was just wondering, is this a good idea? Will it affect the dreads in the future? Thanks
personally had no experience with this...but one would think that it would depend on how mature your dreads are and how big they were when they were cut. These things and more would surely factor in to the success of such an operation.
Ahh alright thanks Well mine are comiong on 9 months old, and its turned out just fine on the thicker locks.
I could see how it could go bad, as obviously your going to be severing a dread in two so you just have to be sure that its locked tight enough to stop the end falling off as alot of hair will lose its root so you might probably end up losing some hair from the dread after you've split them. I don't think anything catastrophic would happen though
well a couple weeks after i had mine done i had to split one of the larger ones because it was pulling from every which way on my scalp. I split it right down the middle to stop the pulling and they seem just fine now. Those ones have the most loops, they're kind cute. Anyways I don't know if that helps but that's my experience thus far!
I don't get how this would work?? I can understand if you cut a lil bit of it to start off and then ripped the rest. But if you cut all the way up what do they look like inside and how do they not just fall out?
The answer is, some hair will fall out yes, but not all of it by any means. It's packed so tightly that it just stays in there.
Hmm...I kinda want to split some of the thicker ones, but I don't want to take anymore chances. BTW, I got a new sig.
And yeah, to the OP, I have heard conflicting stories on this. I've heard some disaster stories and some successful ones. I think it all depends on the individuals hair. I wouldn't ever try it on mine because I like my fatties and congos.
this is an old picture, but these are three dreads that i cut apart once. they were kind of above my ear, all joined together at the root for a good inch or more. left alone, i would have a giant flap right there. at the time, i didnt really want that, so i cut them with a scissors. just a little bit at first, then ripped a little bit with my hands, cut a small bit more, ripped again... you want to be sure you dont over-cut. you cant undo it. make small cuts, then try ripping it. this worked just fine for me. eventually more hair grew out so that little bit was didnt really matter anymore. the cut parts kinda sealed off themselves pretty well.
I LOVE doing this now and then. Like I had a bunch of REALLY think ones that were growing in really funny and I just had the feeling they'd rather be ripped in half and it was sooo very invigorating and they are so much better off now. .I say do what ever feels right. they are on your head, and time fixes all.
