they're a constant reminder to keep connected to the natural world and not get caught up in other stuff. dreads are a microcosm of the universe - they ARE unity and naturalness, not just representations of it. they also make you aware of how people perceive the world and the people in it. after having dreads for almost 6 years, cutting them off, then allowing them to re-knot, you begin to see how people treat you. I used to get stopped on the street (or riding my bike, or driving my car...) and get asked for weed. i'd be seriously haulin' ass on my bike down the road, a total stranger would flag me down as if there's an emergency, then ask if i knew where to find a bag. once i cut them off, no one bothered me about that shit anymore. so mostly, they're a reminder of what i've learned along the way. plus it's really fun to dance with dreads
there are many reasons I could say but in reality just a couple mostly I like how they look in general plus the pain I felt while they were being made relaxed me almost too well also I just wanted to look different from my dad who turns out is almost identical (I have seen the pictures and sadly I have to admit is true) another reason not so much of why but of the how I wanted to get dreads made by different people and see the differences in techniche and look so I ended having my dreads done by 5 different people at different times
to me its kinda my way of seperating myself from mainstream idealism people kinda expect me to be different cause i have dreads, without ever having to say a word... so it softens the blow when they find out how weird i really am LOL
I decided to let my hair dread because I was tired of the washing/conditioning/blowdrying/straightening/curling/moussing/gelling bullshit. And because I was tired of advertising telling me my hair had to shiny and perfect. It's my way of fighting against 'the man'!!
Why I'm keeping my dreads: dreads help me help the environment. I haven't used more than a half a bottle of shampoo in a year. With normal hair I was going through 2+ bottles a month. Why I got them: I'm lazy and never really ever cared about fucking with my hair, but i forced myself to style it when it was normal so I would fit in. plus I just really like dreads. wanted them since i was like 13 so if I had been allowed to start them when I was 13 I would have 5 year old dreads. that blows. but atleast I have them now.
Could you elaborate on how they help the environment? I fail to see how a human hairstyle could affect the planet. Unless you mean to say the shampoo you use now is more eco friendly than the one you used prior to dreads. In that case, it would be the shampoo that is better for the environment rather than the dreadlocks
yea as if something as small could actually have an effect on the environment. want to help the environment? do something that might actually make a difference, like take the stairs, ride a bicycle, take short showers, recycle...
ok what I'm saying is that I'm using less harmful products than I was before I got dreads so I feel as if they have helped me become more environmentally aware. so that would be a plus for having dreads. if thats not a good enough explanation then apparently I'm wasting my time explaining myself (which I shouldn't have to do) or you guys are just trying to start a fight.
