I got dreads because I liked them. The bonus's of having them just happen to be economical and environmental (in some peoples cases). I had a lot of hair before that i was washing every other day, I could easily have gone through a bottle of conditioner every 2 weeks. Yes i did use the fancy 'good for the environment shampoos' every so often, but they made my hair feel gross, and they were expensive for the amount you were getting. Personally i only wash my hair once a week now, and though it might be a very small part in helping the environment every bit counts. This isn't so much a reason to get them but a plus in having them.
when I got dreads I didn't know why I wanted them, just that I did. But as my hair dreaded I learned what they were all about now. Now I have dreads for a multitude of reasons but the most fundamental reason is simplicity. I wake up, don't even have to wash the shit, and go anywhere and look the same as it did yesterday and the day before. Dreads super consistent but yet ever changing. I haven't washed them in over two weeks. No spending money on shitty haircuts you never really liked anyway. And they keep the long hair out of my face. Plus I like how they look and they give me character.
Seriously? Of course small things can have an effect. Every little bit helps. Even the tiny bit less water I use in the shower because I don't have to wash my hair twice and condition it helps. Plus no more nasty shampoo chemicals going into the water supply and then to the ground. Not to mention all the electricity I was using on my hair dryer/straighteners everyday. It all helps. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. Margaret Mead US anthropologist (1901 - 1978) (Sorry for the rant the environment is my soapbox )
I would tell anybody wanting to get them about that plus I mean it really is a reason to get dreads. imagine if 1000 people got dreads and weren't washing their hair constantly how much waste we would see gone. that is 1000 people that use 2 bottles of shampoo and 2 bottles of conditioner a month reducing their use to between 1/2-1 bottle a month. 1000 people=4000 bottles a month (with normal hair). most of that is being thrown in a land fill. say those 1000 people get dreads they reduce the waste being produced to between 500-1000 bottles. so even if the bottles still get thrown in the land fill that is a lot less.
I stand corrected I just hate when people get dreads and claim they did it for the environment. That's pish posh. People (well most of them) get dreads cause they like the way they look. Environmental help is just an added bonus
things change and people change. the topic is why do you wear them not why you got them. so my answer is basically saying why I'm keeping them because if I did it solely to look good then I would of taken them out a long time ago. I guess its with in the terms of what the topic is about. I should go edit my original post guess I didn't type what I really meant.
....to save money on hats and other general insulation, shampoos, conditioners, hair brushes ...I like how they look, this was my initial reason to begin with, the good ol' aesthetics, but i keep em because you can instantly connect with strangers, some people hate em, and then judge my book by its cover - so I don't spare them my time. Helps weed out alot of people and save my time
see, i don't see dreads like that. i just thought they were cool, looked cool, pretty bad ass, so then i decided i wanted them.
because: - dreadlocks are PURE WIN - i am associated with dreadlocks - therefore i am pure WIN by association
I just don't want anything to do with our society anymore and this seemed like a good start on segregating myself from it...who knew when i did it i would find this place aye. ^_^ peace.
Lol just the thought of me even attempting to obtain drugs conjures up all sorts of cringeworthy Hugh Grant-type British awkwardness scenarios in my head
I got my dreads to add to my constantly changing aesthetic, I've got 1/2 inch lobes and double nostril piercings, etc. I want to be a high school teacher and a mommy one day, so I was hoping I could raise some really accepting and open minded people who aren't afraid to be themselves, whatever that is. I'm a walking contradiction, super polite, very hard working, but you wouldn't know it by looking at me lol
There's been so much trouble in our neighbourhood over the past couple of years, and my husband and I always think it's kinda funny, because a lot of narrow-minded people might think we're the most likely to perhaps be the source of some kind of mischief, yet we're the quietest and least troublesome lol
