Hey man! I've been wearing flips for the past two weeks We New Englanders need to tough it out here, 50 degrees is barefoot weather as far as I'm concerned
Honey, you forget that I'm from Russia And I've spent some time up north, where -41F is about normal for winter. Try running out of a steambath and jumping into a pile of snow naked, THEN talk to me
@essenceofweez, man you guys in ND have had some F-uped weather recently. I can't get my mind around how cold -41F is
To give you an idea, I walked about 10 yards and my THIGHS were cold. Mind you I was wearing jeans, a sweatshirt and a heavy coat over it, a hat, heavy gloves, and tennis shoes. Oh, and if you throw a cup of hot water, it turns into ice fog in the air. Last week it was around 50-60 above. Now the 80+ inches of snow we've had is all melting at once and flowing into the river, which now has ice jams and also got filled up from rain and freezing rain from the last storm. That storm turned into a blizzard and the last couple of days here, it's been mayhem because part of town flooded and the blizzard (8 inches of snow with 30-40 MPH winds) made transportation VERY difficult. At this moment, it's 17F. Tomorrow, the high is around 40. By the end of April, highs could be anywhere from 30-80. We just won't know until then. I can't really guarantee warm weather until mid to late June.
Connecticut's all-time low is about -33 F up in Salisbury. The city I'm in got to about -2 F on one Saturday this winter. Yes, weather in New England can sure suck.
I'm from Maine. And yes I have. New England has wide variation, and I'm not exactly in the south of it.
Your area sounds a lot like mine, but truly, your extremes are, well, more extreme. I'm still waiting for my first 50 degree day. And fortunately, my 95" of snow melted off gradually, but I've seen ice jams and flooding in the past. I've managed not to wear shoes since the snow was still rather deep; when we could walk on top of it. Sandals, though! I usually break out of my hiking shoes in mid March, and even before that, I run errands in sandals most of the winter. But as you say, in extreme cold, you only have SECONDS, before it's dangerous. It isn't something to trifle with. I've posted about this before. Only true barefooting so far is on the few days we have sun and 40s. That's about the best April ever offers in Maine.
