I have really slow dial-up from peoplepc "accelerated" My modem is a 56k modem. When i go under properties it says im surfing at 48k. That is bullshit. My average download speed is 2kbps. It takes me 40 minutes to download a 2mb file. I'm getting so sick of it but its all i can use because its cheap. DSL and broadband are not available where i am and satellite is way too expensive. I've looked around and tried different accelerators. None work. And ive gone under modem options and set it at max speed. Nothing works. I still download and surf at around 2kbps. In fact, it took me 15 minutes just to load hip forums.

Is there anything i can do at all??? someone please help me!!!

To my knowledge, there is not a single dial-up carrier that performs download speeds of 56.6K. None. You actually have a very fast dial-up speed at 48K... faster than most.

    TCP/IP
As for the 2K download speed, that is equal to your upload speed. This may be a difficult concept to grasp unless you understand TCP/IP. For every #bytes you download using TCP/IP, you must also upload the same #bytes. There is a very good reason for this too.

Often times, there are errors in the data sent over network media. (data is contained in packets - TCP/IP). TCP/IP rules state that every packet sent must also be recieved and a confirmation packet is then required. If you download a 4Kb file, you must also upload that 4Kb file to the sender (in form of packets). The sender accepts the data your computer uploaded and compares it with what it sent to you. This is how the sender knows the network transmission was successful without error. This entire process takes place in the form of tiny TCP/IP packets, one at a time.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TCP/IP

If your computer can download @48K and upload @2K, you will only recieve TCP/IP packets at a speed of 2K.

So why is the download speed so much faster than the upload speed? Because there are other protocols that are used over the Internet and networks. For example, UDP is often used for broadcasting Internet radio streams. UDP is not reliable enough for file downloads and many other transmisions. UDP is a one-way data stream that does not care the least if there are errors in the data. It is oblivious.

;) hope that sums it up

ok that was pretty helpful. but my actual browsing speed is not much more than 8kbps when it tells me its 48k. And is there anything i can do to boost the upload speed a little bit? thanks.
