I just got my first dreads, I'm on day 3 and I just had some questions. My hair is Caucasian straight, I had them backed combed in. My hair was only about 4-5 inches long. They are holding pretty well so far but I'm a little worried about them being so stiff and course. The only seem to want to lay in one direction. Will they ever loosen up and free fly? Also I've not used any kind of wax or chemicals yet.
Thank for the reassurance. I just washed them for the first time today, they started itching to much. I used some all natural jojoba shampoo, it probably was the best but it was the best I had. My dreads haven't fallen apart but they are pretty lose. What the most effective way of tightening the roots up?
leave the roots alone jojoba is way too conditioning though i would definately not use that till mature ther roots take care of themselves but u might wanna spray with sea salt solution now and then a few hours b4 washing
I just started as well.. actually it seems, i am on day 3 also! no worries.. i'm having the same problems i sort of look like a unicorn with one of them sticking out so rigid I'm a little nervous about the first wash.
That's cool that we started on the same day. How long are yours? I had my wife redread the ones the fell out. They'll be ok I think.. just going to look funny for awhile. I'm worried about how I did the two dreads in the front, it's all I had hair for and they are the same size, but I don't have a line in the middle of my head, they lay in a brick pattern.
hahaha thats what ya get for following dreadheadhq directions..the checkerhead that will go away eventualy.. butlooks silly awhile also..dont use wax or any of the crap they try tellin u to use
and dont botyher fixing dreads that fell out or youll just dammage em ..leave em be and they'll fix themselves
the dreads will stand up all funny for a week or so, theyll calm down when theyve been washed & slept on for a bit =] and they will fall out/get loose, dont fret
I don't remember where I got the checkerboard idea, I just didn't want a seam down the middle of my head. This is day 1 just after we finished them, standing straight up. Since them I've kept them under a bandanna while out, and just let them fly at home. Do you guys have any suggestions at to what kind of product to get? I'm being very picky and I can't decide. My hair usually stays pretty oily, I have a little dandruff but it isn't acting up yet. I guess I need something to wash & something for my scalp I won't have to wash. Edit:Oh gawd! i forgot the picture
That looks great, so funny. You should wear them around like that I would recommend Dr. Bronner's or Kiss My Face if you can find it. And yeah, don't worry if they fall out, mine all did in the back after the first wash but now they're knotting up on their own. Good start!
They're gonna be fine When I started my dreads they were 'bout the same length and I had super straight Caucasian hair too. Ten months later they are kick ass. My first 4 moths were hell, though. I could deal with them, because I knew they were going to be fine later on, but I got a lot of discouraging comments of family and peers. best of luck
looks like you started them at the perfect length. don't bother with the loose tips, they always end up coming loose. they take the longest to lock up.
What do I need to do to start out with, my locks aren't tight so I know I shouldn't wash my head every other day but my head starts to itch, what can I do to keep my head from itching so they dreads can keep locking.
nothing =] just leave them. wash when you need to,, i waited 6 days before my first wash (and then washed like every 3 days after that) and it was a massive relief when i finally did it. no more itchies! =D as for helping the itchies.. scratch them itll loosen the head funk too ready to be washed away.. orrrr get some stuff. i used knotty boy peppermint scalp spray stuff, its GOOD. but now im thinkin of makin my own, just water and some essential oil or summat
arrrgh! wash your hair, dude! if you're worried about them coming loose, wear a stocking cap while you wash.
