Anyone else out there seen, heard DTB? that young man can WAIL on the slide like nobody i've heard. their keyboard/flute player is amazing. soulful vocalist. tight bass grooves and drumming. flat out, they rock. anyone else know of other jazz slide guitarists...does haynes play anything like Derek Trucks' stuff? damn, they blow my mind. you can hear some great stuff on their website. www.derektrucksband.com
He's pretty good. I've seen him a couple times. The best was here in Nashville in the parking lot of Jackson's Grille. They had people dancing around with fire... it was cool. I was right in front and he played really well. His singer is great. The percussion guy kept staring at me. That's the only thing I don't like about being up front. It can be a little uncomfortable....
I haven't seen or heard DTB but he plays on the latest Allman Brothers Band release Hitting The Note. That is a great piece of work. They all shine on it. Derek has surpassed Duane on the slide. Duane's ride was cut short, so there is no telling where he would have taken the slide, but Derek has gone beyond. And his musical mind is incredible, too. He oozes music. A friend saw DTB about nine years ago. The band played Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis, 'Trane, et.al. And they screamed. The man can play whatever he wants to and it will work. Warren Haynes is also on Hitting The Note (he is guitar left - Derek is guitar right) and the things he and Derek do will hook you. Especially the last song Old Friend. It's just Warren and Derek on acoustics with slides and it will sit you down and make you listen.
The Allmans, SCI, and New Earth Mud were at Red Rocks Friday and Saturday -- if I had any extra money I would've gone. DTB is awesome.
I'm gonna try and tape him at Smilefest this year. It all depends on what time Lary Keel and friends get through.
If you are in Central Pa, i think he is coming to Harrisburg at the Whitaker Center. I'd like to check him out live. I love his playing.. He picked up where Duane left off!
How can you even notice his nose in the middle of all the mind-bending, soul shaking sound that erupts from this man's fingers? I can barely even open my eyes when he's rippin'!
I adore him. When he plays, it's almost like his guitar is talking. Especially that song with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Maki Madni (sp), is so beautiful.
Derek's been performing for a long time. I heard him at Skipper's Smokehouse in Tampa back when he was only fourteen! He was playing the blues already then, at fourteen! I met him after the show and asked him why he enjoyed playing blues when other kids his age were listening to New Kids on the Block. He laughed and said something like"...Yeah right like that's really music." Seems he's both smart and talented. I'll be catching him next at MagFest for sure, if not before.
i'm just bumbing an old thread maybe to see someones opinion on his bands new cd. i thought it was pretty good and i've been a fan of him for a long time.
