I saw a news clip a while ago about this choir group of a couple dozen people that would meet at the church regularly. One day, each person in the choir was ten minutes late for choir practice. It turned out that there was a horrific gas explosion at the church at the time they would have normally arrived. Everyone would have been killed if they had been on time. The argument in the story was that God made everyone ten minutes late to miss the explosion. My question: Why didn't God simply make the explosion happen ten minutes earlier? .
theres something in this news story kind of vital. and it's missing. it probably left out a major fact like the choir bus broke down...something similar.
Why do idiots let religion get in the way of a belief of something higher than this material world? There is a difference between being religious and being spiritual. I am no fan of any organized religion, but it seems that those who most vociferously shun organized religion, also shun any idea of a creator or higher power. Just because the followers of religion are mislead, does not mean there is nothing more than what is experienced with one's five senses.
luckily you're not the only one who sees things this way. sprituality is valid and even necessary. the modern concept of organized religion creates a structure that people can live by without stepping back to look at the facts. in some ways it's becoming easier to break away from that certain sort of conditioning, but you're right, people are still more inclined to embrace one extreme or the other than the more rational middle ground.
I could read that as you wishing for some Christians to be blown up in a freak accident...or, God wanting a few Christians to die. I'd say...It could have occured ten minutes earlier and we would never have heard about it...or just the fact it happened with out the people involved saying they were late etc. Spooky events seem spooky because we make them that and we miss a possible truth; a few were actually 9 minutes late...heck, even 12 minutes...they made most of it up, because they believed in devine intervention. What kind of story would that be - if the truth was laid bare -, though? A bloody boring one.
I don't know. Many atheists seem open-minded to the idea of a higher power. The main beef is with the typical theistic Abrahamic god who has will, desire, and lots of other human traits. An omnipotent sky-wizard who would care enough to meddle in human affairs that he would simultaneously blow up a church while delaying all attendees so none were harmed. I do believe in a greater consciousness (I don't know if your comment was aimed at me) but not in some deity that is actively involved in, or even especially aware of, our existence.
If you did, you would have failed miserably at reading comprehension. The question was, instead of blowing up the church at the usual time and delay people, why not just blow the church up 10 minutes early and save yourself the trouble of having to delay the attendees.
I have. I just did. I get the impression it was God. Why would God want some Christians dead...Or: "or, God wanting a few Christians to die."? I don't get it, otherwise...treat me as being dumb and explain...Thanks.
This happened in March 1, 1950. This snopes article goes into what happened - http://www.snopes.com/luck/choir.asp From the peoples explanations of why they were late, it seems it had more to do with their own intuitions and decisions rather then any outside forces.
The reverend of the church lit the furance and left. A broken gas pipe outside the church was the source of the gas for the explosion. god made the gas seep into the building and explode.
