This happened a couple of weeks ago, but I thought i'd ramble on about it anyway.

I just went to an Indie show with a couple friends, smoked a bowl or 2, and had 2 tallboys of Old Millwuakee.

I came home, and was beginning to sober up. An hour later, I lie down and try to drift off to sleep...

Suddenly, I'm in hell. I am awake, I didn't fall asleep. Demons and ghouls are crawling along my ceiling, eyes peer into my window, strange voices whisper in my head. All the while, I'm squeezing my eyes shut, cowered into a ball, hidden under blankets in the corner of my bed.

It happened extremely sparodically, and I had had a fine day. Sooner or later I passed out, but I say, that was one of the single most terrifying things to ever happen to me yet.

Is it so rare? Is there a cause? Any one have any similar experiences?

That's a hypnagogic hallucination. It's not rare...it happens to some people occasionally, and it's really terrifying. Pretty much, it's an intrusion of REM sleep (dreaming) into the waking mind. It happens to me quite often cause I'm narcoleptic and those type of hallucinations are a symptom of that. And if I'm high, it's 10 times worse.
