I have very long straight hair, and I can't get my whole hair dreaded, but was wondering if I could get a few in my hair?

I know people say the dreads would eat up my non dread hair, but I would be meticulous in making sure that didn't happen.

Anyway, there's a specialist dread hair salon not to far from me and I didn't want to go in, ask for just a few dreads in my hair and for them to laugh at me..!

first of all dont go near the salon its a waste of money, and yes you can dread one part of your hair it will just be a little difficult to stop all your hair being eaten

Cut a bit of hair and dread the whole head. Where's the problem?
I have only one dread, but that's just temporarily, if it goes by plan, i'll get my whole head done next saturday.

I know a few people who have underneath they're head dreaded. Like 4/5 dreads. I was thinking about it too before I decided to do my whole hair. My friend has one too. I'd say twist and rip it up:D

Oh it's not the length of my hair that's stopping me getting the whole of my head dreaded..it's work :) I don't know how to do them properly myself so I thought a salon would be the best idea?

Heh, I think it would be weird if I only had a few dreads...The rest of the hair would be an afro! xD

its pointless going to a salon, we have yet to see one that doesnt load your hair with loads of wax and asks you to come back every 2 weeks for "maintanence"..... what maintanence we ask???? its one of very few hairstyles that require you dont do anything to it to work

just get a friend or family member to backcomb a few sections of your hair wherever you want them and then twist and rip if you feel like it,

Then all you have to do is make sure they dont congo together by ripping them apart every week or two

Theres an old lady here in town with one big fat dread in the front. Its so weird looking to me because the rest of her hair is non dreaded and when her hair is up she leaves the dread hanging down. I give her props for going the naturale route though....the one dread is obviously natural....its all lopsided, loopy, and crazy looking. But its still just weird to me. I personally dont understand why people do it....but if its something you like go for it and have fun doing it! =] I would stay clear of the salon though...you shouldnt have to pay for knotted hair! =]

Hi Abertha, If You Only Want Something Just A "Little" Different

Why Not Do What I Did Sometime Ago.

And Put In A Few Braids.

Looks Nice, And Will Not Lock Up With Other Hair Like Dreads Will.:)

    Just A Thought.:)

    Cheers Glen.

sweety, spend a few days on the internet, places like this, etc. you will know how to do them properly, there's several methods, and then you will be good to go

as for them sucking the other hair it, that's probably true. Probably. I don't know, I've never had just one or two dreads lol, but my bangs don't get sucked into them, don't know about long hair though. pretty sure if you just took time to rip them away from your hair once or twice a week you'd be fine.

but I'd be worried about the comb... when you're brushing your hair, you would have to NOT brush the dread by accident. occassionally when I brush my bangs a dread or two will get caught and god does it ever hurt, plus I have to spend like an hour work the hair I dragged out back in, it sucks big much.

Thanks guys - yes I think it will be hard in the beginning to not brush the dreads with the rest of my hair, but I'm pretty sure I can do it.

Is it really not worth going to a salon for them then? I was going to trade the guy some tattoos for them..

I figured I would get better results if someone who knew what they were doing did it. Im worried now!

well as for just having several dreads, Ive seen it and its fairly common, at least here, usually you would get the dreads in the bottom of your head, around the edge so they dont have so much hair around them to eat up

also when you have just a couple of dreads you still have to wash the rest of your hair so if they are not tight enough or done correctly the will come undone, also they will look a lot frizzier.

usually it isnt worth going to the salon for them cause most (not all) people at salons will do them and them fill em with a load of wax so they look nicer or and Ive only heard about it, burn all the frizzies so they will look "clean". Sometimes there are people at salons who know how te do dreads correctly and how to teach patience to their clients instead of giving them quick fixes to make their dreads look perfect in a day

you will get better results if someone who knows what they are doing dreads em for you, but those people usually arent at salons, and besides all you need is to read a tutorial and get some practice maybe see someon else doing it to figure out how to do them yourself.

also tattoos arent cheap are they? usually dreads are... I got mine done for a full total of 50 pesos which is under 5 dollars, so why would you trade a tattoo for some dreads?

don't go to the fucking salon. look up youtube different ways to do them and do that. I don't know ANYONE who came out w anything remotely looking like dreads from the salon. Or anything that 'turned' into a decent set they were so fucked up.

Here in Norway everything is very expensive..tattoos and dreads alike ;)

Says on their site they don't use wax. But I guess I will look around and see how plausible it is to do my own dreads. Only reason I was going to a salon is because I would prefer to do something right and with the expertise of someone who knows what they are doing...not sure I trust myself to not mess it up. Maybe I'll give it a go.

there is no 'expertise' w dreads. It's matted hair!! just look around the site and learn a little before making the decision to get a few dreads. There is no way you'll mess it up unless you load wax on them or backcomb the shit out of them.

    dreads are free!

and as for them saying they don't use wax, I'm sure they use something: gels or whatever chemically crap they want.

Just so you know, dreads is a maturing process you can't 'buy' them. Whatever way you choose to go it takes about 6-8 months for them to form.

omg PLEASE do not pay fucking Norwegian prices for your dreads!!!! lol

Can you....put clothes on? Make a sandwich? Drive a car? Pick your nose? Use your hands? Then you can make dreads. We're talking about things which would make themselves if you just left your hair to follow its nature, so why in the world would you pay someone?! lol

who knows anything bout this salon?

might be a really cool place that does do it properly/natural/without wax ?

I would go and investigate the methods they would use before you actually use them, ask exactly what they will do and HOW and if they will use anything on them.
Make sure that you get all the info, then maybe come back and tell us what they said and we could help some more??

you guys need to remember that not everyone has ppl willing to dread your hair,I know a girl that had hair down past her ass and no-one would dread it as they feared it would take so long and did not wanna mess it up.

Its your money if you wanna pay to have them done its your choice no-one elses.

Thanks chemigals! That's what I was talking about. I have long hair and no one to help me with it at this moment. I have asked my friends but no one has ever done it before or is willing to try!

They have a website..I see what it says about their methods etc and maybe I can come back and ask if you guys think it's ok.

Although so many of you seem very against paying for them..I hope you won't mind me posting back here with the info.:grouphug:
