Is there anything sexy about these costumes?

Hi I study anthropology and am researching into ethnic groups in Tibet. One ethnic group who I research are the Khampas, who amounst other unusual traditions, have an ancient culture of investing their wealth into jewelry, which is accumulated over the years, and passed down generation to generation. This is actually necessary because they are nomadic, in their home of the himalayas they often have to pick up and move house so they need to have their wealth stored in an easily portable form. Obviously never used to be any banks in Tibet, so gold and jewels traditionally were the best possible store for wealth.

Some of the jewelry and costumes in the following pictures are worth many hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars.

In this Khampa culture it is considered extremely beautiful and even somewhat seductive to see woman to be adorned like this, generally an abundance of gold and jewels decorating her from head to toe.

My question, first, do you consider these costumes beautiful, and second, is it sexy to see women adorned to such an extent?

Interesting shots but I don't find them beautiful nor sexy. They look like they just crawled out of the playpen at McDonald's.

 

I think they're beautiful, although my tastes run to fewer beads and I don't find them especially sexy at the moment. But I'm sure a few fantasies could change that.

As an anthropology student, you should know that there are generally two sources of sexual attractiveness.

Physical signs of fertility and ability to reproduce, such as healthy skin, proper nutrition, no signs of disease, and appropriate body proportion, are most universally accepted as sexual attractive. For example, people from any culture would find the fact these women have healthy skin and neotnous features(full lips/eyes etc) attractive. These play on our biological desires to reproduce with someone who is able to have children and raise them to maturity, so our genes can be passed on. These signs of fertility are found attractive the world over.

The second source of attractiveness is culturally dictated. Due to specifics of one culture, certain features that are found non-arousing or even unattractive can gain great sexual importance in certain cultures. These costumes are a great examples. Others are stretched ear lobes, culturally specific fashions, etc. These features typically have limited appeal outside the given culture, which is why most of the people responding do not find the costumes sexy even though they are considered so in that culture.

The jewelry might not be sexy,, but those women sure are, and you have to respect the cultural ideology behind it,, but they are damn beautiful.

 

Sorry,,, one more addition to what i just said,, In our """""""culture""" lmao... It's sexy to leave no mystery behind, mini skirts ,thongs , whatever, but it's like lip plates or real tribal facial tattoos in a different culture, people think different things are sexy. People used to think that big women were the sexiest because it showed their status as being rich and not having to do anything for themselves. All a matter of perspective if you ask me.

 

I imagine that they are attractive in the cultures they originate from but they aren't attractive to a person who grew up in the west.

 

i find the girl in the first picture you posted extremely beautiful. about the costumes i think they are beautiful and creative ....but far from sexy.

I don't think they are beautiful they look too over the top, perhaps the point, but they could do with a little more class and style...they should pick one motif not one hundred and one...who designs them?

Not sexy, but those costumes look like a ton of fun, lol.

Also, that video, she could be naked and the suit jacket would still ruin the sex appeal.

 

I don't dig the costumes but regardless, they certainly are beautiful.

what crossed my mind while i was reading your post is an analogy with the west:
is a guy in a porsche sexy?
is a guy in a huge lexus attractive?

is a girl sexier if she wears prada?

it's explained that this sort of stuff shows power and wealth and that they will be able to take good care of a family.. maybe there's some similar pattern with jewelry on tibet...

and like others here, i think they are very beautiful..
and i also like the jewelry; and it looks cute on them, knowing the background story.

it does look silly to me, all that metal on them but just as silly as a few hundreds $ versace sunglasses... but, hey, that's why im on a hippy forum...
