Surprised there's not a category for mystery books! What are your favorite mystery books, characters, and authors?

I've been on a Rex Stout kick lately -- his Nero Wolfe novels are new to me, and I'm really enjoying them. Started with "Before Midnight," which focused on a murder during an advertising industry contest. Now I'm in the middle of "And Be a Villain," which is about a murder during a live radio broadcast. Awesome stuff.

hands down, Sherlock Holmes is at the top of the list! i love the Sherlock Holmes mysteries. i've liked novels about Holmes since i was like 9 or 10 and i have reread them many times. i own a collection of short stories and novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (got them last Christmas :)).
can't think of any more off the top of my head but that's the one that really stands out in my mind.
