Hey guys. I started playing about 5 months ago. Anyways I'm looking to buy my first electric guitar and I want one that is durable and doesn't come out of tune that much. The sound that I really really enjoy is the classic rock/psychedelic/progressive/spacey sound. My price range is about $500 or under.

Name the best guitar I can get for that price..

For classic rock I keep hearing Fender strat, telecaster, gibson les paul, fender telecaster..

Most of these seem to be slightly out of my price range though. Is a fender stratocaster HSS a good buy? thats $549 at guitar center.... Would a squier strat be a good purchase?

lol..alright man. This one dude I know who supposedly knows a lot about guitars told me the squier isn't a bad guitar.

With the stratocasters though, there are many different kinds by fender. The one that is $549 at guitarcenter is a HSS. So I would assume this is the most basic version of the strat. What's the big differences between this strat and the other ones by fender which are much more money? After the HSS, they're like $1000 and up....

I bought a Mexican-made Strat for less than $500 that I'm very happy with.

In bad times the pawn shops are the place to go.

When times are bad pawn brokers get overwhelmed with guitars and they pay next to nothing for them. My son got a BC Rich from a denver pawn shop for $250 and that was 3 years ago. Today the same thing may sell for $100.

I spent 40 years working for pawn shops and jewelers, when times are bad they pay next to nothing and sell for a little profit.

My son recommends Epiphone, Ibanez, ESP, Fender. With things like they are you may be able to get a used Fender for a couple hundred bucks.
If you don't have a pawn shop where you live most PS's sell on ebay .

    Good Luck
    Dan
PS I'll bet if you look around you might be amazed what you'll find

If you plan to spend the entire 500 smackers on an instrument, you should really consider the resale value. Squires aren't "bad" guitars, they are entry level instruments. They do suck in many ways a beginner isn't likely to notice right away and they don't have a good resale value when you go to trade up.

Many Japanese made guitars ( Ibanez, Epiphone, etc...) from the 70's and 80's are excellent instruments and can be had from pawnshops for as little as 200-300 dollars.

Research "How to buy a used electric guitar and not get ripped off"
How to tell if a neck is warped, for instance, is an important skill when examining your potential purchase.

If you don't want to be bothered with all this, my advice is to save up another 500 bucks before you go shopping for a new guitar. Get the best one you can afford. Remember, the price you see on a new guitar at a retail shop is not the bottom line. Approach guitar salesmen the same as you would a car salesman.
    Dicker dicker dicker.... Good luck!

I have a brand new lite ash strat and I dont even play it that often..
    http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/...aster-Electric-Guitar-with-Tremolo?sku=511337

I play my 15 yr old ?Ibanez,, you could get a floyd rose tremolo ibanez for like $220.00 new, Imo its up there with a strat if its not better than one.. I like them a tad lighter on the shoulder.. but a very good instrument..

here GRX20, mine is like I said 15yrs old.. Its been beaten like a readhead step child, dropped, thrown, collided into others playing..
And it still plays like a dream.. :D
