I have a 72-cell greenhouse in the window where I planted a bunch of stuff, including 6 4 hot peppers. I know they like it hot, but I can't afford a heating mat.
Last year I got my cayennes to come up and fruit, but only one of my Chinese 4-colors (and that ended up being damaged by a hailstorm and never producing). This year I got an American 4-color (Prurira? Purira?), and all of the sweet peppers I planted have come up, but not one hot one has. What can I do?

Waiting on those hot peppers to sprout can be a pain. Light can help peppers germinate. Do you have the seeds covered with soil or are they sitting on top? Just having them sitting on top can help things along. A window may not be the best place to get them started if it is cold there. Place them close to a heat source until they start coming up.

It's annoying because everywhere else in my house is pretty much dark (no sun anyway). The window I had them in last year was really drafty, but this year I put them in front of the insulated sliding glass door (that's technically a window, right?:p), so there should be no cold air getting to them. It gets pretty warm during the day, even when the sun isn't out... That's a good tip about light, though. I pushed them down a bit when I first planted them. Maybe I should dig them back up?
    Thanks!

How long since you first planted them?

Two weeks, I think? I didn't keep track... I usually don't because pretty much everything comes up in a few days in the greenhouse. Now all of my sweet peppers are up and not one hot one has sprouted. Everything else has come up. I don't know if it's me, the temperature or the company I ordered them from.
I got hot peppers from that company last year and only one out of two came up. It didn't do well either, but I always assumed it was because of the hail storm that ripped up most of my garden while I was away (I left my mother to tend to it- never seen her so panicked, heh). Nearly everything recovered, but the pepper plant was stunted and never even flowered let alone produced.

Some hot peppers can take up to a month to germinate so don't throw them out just yet. But I also suspect your seed source may be at fault. Also let the soil surface on the hot peppers just about dry out before you rewater them.

Thanks for the tip! I was just about to give up.
I hope it's not the company. I just ordered tea seeds for $7 from them!
    Never again after this...

I don't think the light is necessary for them to germinate, it just helps. If you want you could experiment and uncover a few and see how things progress for those and the ones that are still covered.

But as gardener said it can take some awhile to germinate, but you might want to find a new source for the seed. What kind of pepper is it?

I haven't grown that before. I tried Chinese five color last year and really liked it. It has done well so far this year.

I planted some chilli peppers bout 3 weeks ago, they are just stared to sprout my bellboy peppers I planted 4/5 weeks ago and they are just started to come up too

I planted my on the windowsill in a sunny position so don't worry they'll be fine

I plnted one last year but I left it a bit late and only got 1 measly small one off it, I cut back most of the leaves and carried on wartering it
I noticed last week that it's started to grow new leaves and is producing about 10 flowers hopefullt my other plants will do as well

sweet peppers don't take long to germinate, but hot peppers take 50/90 days

Yeah, they never came up. I'm trying a different company. Nothing that came from Reimer ever worked well for me, and they're not organic or heirloom anyway. I think I'll try rareseeds.com this year if no one has any objections to them. They have the 5-color Chinese AND Thai chilies, both ornamental and both very useful to me! ;)
Ack, I want curry now!! >.<

I don't think they are exactly the same, but from what I have read, they are eerily similar! Thanks for bringing it up. I might have to consider them as well. :)

soaking the seeds in water one week before planting speeds up germination time
