Is anyone here a silent film fan? I like the silents, especially the ones with Mabel Normand and Fattie Arbuckle.

You're lucky to have a silent movie palace where you are!

I like to turn the sound off on films, does that count?

It's just you notice so much more.

I tend to enjoy the comedies such as Buster Keaton. "The General", for example, is a remarkable film, but don't think present day Hollywood and Political Correctness would attempt to produce a movie with a Confederate sympathiser being the hero and the Union forces being the "heavies".

We watched one in school and I thought it was beyond boring...I don't like silence for that long.

If you don't buying a DVD, check out some on line stores such as Barnes and Noble or Borders (I think less expensive than B&N). Maybe the public library might stock some for renting. Blockbuster may have some for rent, I'm not certain.

I guess it is an accquired taste. The best way to watch a silent film is the way it was originally intended to be show. Early on the exhibitors and film makers realized total silence while the film as being shown as a detractor to the film. They devised ways to punctuate the action and moods with sound effects. This being done, in large movie houses, with Pipe Organs. With this all sorts of effects where possible; ranging from train whistles to drum rolls and brass bands.

If all that was show was silent movie, silently; then you didn't really get a good silent movie experience.
