The eastern world, it is explodin’.Violence flarin’, bullets loadin’You’re old enough to kill, but not for votin’You don’t believe in war, but what’s that gun you’re totin’And even the Jordan River has bodies floatin’But you tell meOver and over and over again, my friendAh, you don’t believeWe’re on the eveof destruction.Don’t you understand what I’m tryin’ to sayCan’t you feel the fears I’m feelin’ today? If the button is pushed, there’s no runnin’ awayThere’ll be no one to save, with the world in a graveTake a look around you boyIt’s bound to scare you boyAnd you tell meOver and over and over again, my friendAh, you don’t believeWe’re on the eveof destruction.Yeah, my blood’s so mad feels like coagulatin’I’m sitting here just contemplatin’I can’t twist the truth, it knows no regulation.Handful of senators don’t pass legislationAnd marches alone can’t bring integrationWhen human respect is disintegratin’This whole crazy world is just too frustratin’And you tell meOver and over and over again, my friendAh, you don’t believeWe’re on the eveof destruction.Think of all the hate there is in Red ChinaThen take a look around to Selma, AlabamaYou may leave here for 4 days in spaceBut when you return, it’s the same old placeThe poundin’ of the drum, the pride and disgraceYou can bury your dead, but don’t leave a traceHate your next-door neighbor, but don’t forget to say graceAnd… tell me over and over and over and over again, my friendYou don’t believeWe’re on the eveOf destructionMm, no no, you don’t believeWe’re on the eveof destruction.
The Turtles, eh? Yep, we are on the eve of destruction. Heh, that should have been Bush's campaign song.
Well the Turtles did cover it. It actually ended up being a hit for them. I knew that they didn't write it, though. I think most people know of the Turtles' version better.
I didn't know that the Turtles did a cover of the song. I'll check it out. But I still think that Barry McGuire's version is the best known, because it was #1 hit. Was The Turtles' version even released on single?
according to the official site of the turtles, 'eve of destruction' was recorded in 1965 for the album 'it ain't me babe', and it was released on single in 1970, reaching #100 on the billboard chart.
That's such a great song. I haven't heard the Turtles' cover of it, but Barry McGuire has a really cool sound. Sometimes it feels like we're on the eve of destruction, doesn't it? *sigh* If people would just look around, man, and see what they're doing...
