A ceremony has been held in Basra to mark the official end of the six-year British military mission in Iraq.
UK combat operations ended as 20th Armoured Brigade took part in a flag-lowering ceremony with a US brigade.
In London, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said a new chapter in relations between the two countries had begun.
Earlier, a memorial service attended by Defence Secretary John Hutton took place in Basra for the 179 UK personnel who have died during the conflict.

    It was very moving.

BAE to axe 500 jobs as troops exit Iraq

LONDON (AFP) — Defence equipment firm BAE Systems said Thursday that it will cut around 500 jobs and close three sites, partly because of lower demand from British armed forces in Afghanistan and Iraq.
"As part of its ongoing transformation programme in the UK land sector, BAE Systems is to close three sites and cut jobs at another three, with the loss of some 500 jobs," BAE said in a statement.
BAE said the announcement followed "a downturn in work supporting British Army operations in Iraq and Afghanistan."

How is the second one good, yes the fact there's less demand is good, but 500 people losing their jobs in a recession puts a damper on it

Mmm, thought somebody would pick up on that. Thankfully, the majorty of them are highly skilled and should not have difficulty finding new jobs.
    Fingers crossed.

i suspect odon must have shed a small tear

considering that he refused to go to iraq

    or anywhere near that region

britain destroyed its manufacturing industry under margaret thatcher, except the weapons industry.

the good news is that britain is sending more troops to afghanistan so their troops can die there instead, not that odon cares because he won't go there either.

It certainly is greatly reduced in Iraq. Sadly, the war is not over yet.
We are one step closer, though. Probably understating that, actually.

Not going through this BS again.
I am glad the Iraq war is moving swiftly to a point our troops can come home. If you think I wouldn't think this a good thing, please do read my mind and tell me. Just not here.

    Lol. Like you know.

I do care, you bloody moron. God, you do piss me off sometimes.
