hmm, as far as i know vehicle is a 3 syllable word... and i really have no idea if you've heard americans adding syllables to it or if the british pronounce it "veelk."
I have never heard this. I've heard "do what" as an "I don't understand" expression. I don't believe it's strictly a southern colloquialism.
Yeah, it does only have three. Obviously I was getting carried away. Look, i'm not the only one: http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081217014427AAD5bHr (catch the 2nd response)
I say it all the time, but never in formal conversation around the office, for that requires strict professionalism and acute morality. Such a deprivation of the English language cannot be excused in an executive environment.
We also say , " Yer Purtty", or, " Thats Purtty That is", Purtty meaning terrible or bad. Purtty is actually pretty , for Yall that dont speak southern
well i had no idea it was such a hot issue in england... i guess you learn something every day. i don't trust people who pronounce the "H" in it either. the most common pronunciation in this area is vee-ikkle. still 3 syllables, but the H is silent. i didn't realize purty was southern either; people say that up here too.
yeah that one caugt me up a few times when i first moved down south. i had to hold my tounge from giving suggestions when people would say it. it basically means 'huh?'
Lol, It isn't a hot issue in England. It is just one of those things that seperates us from you guys. I'm sure how we speak seems unfamiliar as how you speach sounds to us. I just don't think you can say one word (loo). When you lot have a whole lexicon of weird utterances. Anybody that momenteraly stops when saying that word, is weird. I pronounce it veerkle. Simple isn't it?
lol, glad i know this now. "do what" sounds almost like an insult to me. i mean, a guy bumps into you and he's like "do what?" it's almost like..."i'll show you what i'm gonna do motherfucker"
its not used as a "excuse me" in that instance. its used when you dont here what someone said .. instead of "excuse me i didnt here what you said" you would say, "now do what, i didnt hear you".
simple indeed. although the vee-hikkle people are at least going on how it's spelled... where'd you get that R from? i don't think i actually stop momentarily; my pronunciation leaves all consonant sounds out of the middle of the word, but it's all said in one fluid 3 syllable string. i think this discussion would make infinitely more sense if we could just hear each other say the word...
Nothing is hot in England. I say Viakul. I think that's the best way to put it into writing but the u is softer and it's all a bit blurred into each other. Three syllables though, I think?
