He doesn't get many mentions, as far as I can tell...definitely among the best there ever was.

    Any other fans here?

I swear, his 'Live at Antibes 1960' is one of the best live jazz albums ever.

Never heard that one, but--yeah, I love Mingus. My favorites:

    Mingus Ah Um
    Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus
    Town Hall Concert 1964
Black Saint and the Sinner Lady

Big fan of Eric Dolphy's work with him. Dolphy's style was perfect for Mingus' compositions.

mingus was one bad dude. On the bass, ofcourse. But his compositions were something else. Also, all the people in his bands were top notch. Gotta love some Lester Young.

One of my best. The first jazz album I ever got was a charles mingus album. There's this famous song: Cumbia and jazz fusion. Incredible you guys have to listen to it if you never did before. And of course, portrait in three colors, Moaning mambo.. I don't know where to strat and where to finish.

I agree, Mingus is among my favorite musicians/composers/personalities in all music.

Live at Antibes and Black Saint are probably my favorite recordings (live and studio respectively). Anytime Dolphy was with him there is magic.

Mingus the merciless, I always call him.;)

    http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/1993-04-21/music/mingus-among-us/

"A 1966 documentary shows him casually testing out a rifle by blasting a hole in the roof of his New York loft.
He regularly pimped and courted a bevy of whores and he cradled a lifelong obsessive rage that falsely maintained his stepbrother had been lynched by a mob of angry whites.
Mingus was forever paranoid of imaginary foils, once attempting to murder a fellow band member with an ax over an alleged racial slur."
(edit: only after the dude pulled a knife on Mingus. This article doesn't mention that...)

I think he was one of the most important figures in modern jazz... He was way the fuck out there!

    Love Mingus.

Me and some friends started a little combo and Haitian Fight Song is definitely one of the most fun songs to play
