how long should your hair be before you get dreads?

i want dreads and right now i don't think my hair is long enough (my bangs go down to my lips). was wondering how long my hair should be before i get dreads. i'm not lookin' to end up lookin' like the dude from bio dome.

 

dont really remember what the minimum length was but if you dont like short dreads you should probably wait till you hair is about 2x as long as you want the dreads to be or maybe 1.5x

 

the minimum for backcombing is 3 inches.
so ur hair would be fine to dread now with any method.
but if u plan on growing ur hair out, u could always go the neglect route and grow dreads as u grow ur hair out.

 

if u dont bio dome dude dreads then grow ur hair out till u can put all of it in a descent ponytail

12ft is best.
I mean you could do it at 10ft but thats pushing it

 

If i could go back in time, I would wait tiill my hair was past my nipples a bit before doing it again.

It was at my shoulders when i got them done, and i could only just put my hair in a pony tail before i got them. After my dreads tightened i couldnt tie them back, really annoying!!

 

I started locking at 2-4inches, but my hair is waaay curly and I had a sideshow bob thing going on for a few months. neglect method is slow for straight haired people, but its soo much fun to watch!
