well,90% sure it was a copperhead that got him. his paw and leg are swole up about three times normal size and he is actin humiliated..lol that will teach him,,,i hope...
A copperhead is pretty fucking poisonous isn't it? Won't he die? I am not as experienced with copperheads so I don't know. You are about as old as the internet though, so isn't that a bad thing?
not necessarily, but there are plenty of germs and coagulants that can lead to infection.. Most healthy dogs can fight it, be sore for a while and live.. Im sure HHB knows the best treatment for the dog.. :cheers2:
no copperheads aint bad, well as poisonous snake bites go .rare are they deadly. ya get bit by one and go to the emergency room this is standard procedure, put you on a iv and give you something for pain, measure the area bitten for swelling, come back every fifteen minutes for a hour and a half or so and remeasure. write you a script for pain pills and antibiotics. charge you 1200 bucks.. to be quite honest,id be hard pressed to go if i were bit. if i could stand the pain,i dont think i would. folks ive seen bit says they hurt like hell, judging from the way ya swell up i imagine. as with any snake bite the thing ya got to be concerned with is infection.thats the killer.as orison said, snakes are some of the nastiest bites there are. also a baby copperhead tends to be more lethal as they dont control there venom as well but they are also less apt to strike. as far as the dog,he is 125 pound Great Pyrenees so im not real worried. we dosed him up good with vitamin c,aspirin as a analgesic and will give him a couple more rounds and we keep antibiotics around so will run a course of them through him just to be on the safe side. hopefully this has taught him about snakes, but some dogs never learn..
Copperhead bites are usually non-lethal. They're poisonous, yes, but their venom is less potent than some other snakes.
HHB is very knowledgeable on this stuff. Definitely a person you would want to have nearby if stranded out in the wilderness.
its not that, its that they use it sparingly. thats why the babies are so much worse. they havent learned to control their venom and tend to put more in you than a full grown one will. copperheads are about the most ill tempered snake that there is. just walking by them will cause them to strike many times, but because its a get the fuck away from me type strike they dont release a lot of venom.. gotta save it for the next poor son of a bitch.. lol
I haven't dealt with copperheads since I moved away from Florida..we used to have a ton of those and also water moccasins..here in California, this is what we deal with it. I do believe that snake encounters are cylinical, meaning this year is going to be a busy year..there have already been quite a few bites in my area and it is only the beginning of the season..plus a mountain lion attack..things are going well..
this area is covered up with them. a few years back the ex wife was bit on the hand in the carport. last year i almost picked this one up reaching for wood for the outdoor oven underneath the porch. imagine realizing what you were fixin to pick up wasnt a piece of wood..lol yeah,i about shit..
um yeah, I can understand that. I was on a hike this morning and ran across 4 different snakes and one was a rattler that my foot came within 3 ft of..I can honestly say I screamed like a little girl..the thing is, they camoflauge well..nice pic btw..
we have timber rattlers here but not near as many. im not a big fan of snakes. i know they serve their purpose and in the wild i let them be but around the homestead i see anything other than a garden snake its dead. a couple years back a buddy of mine caught a big rat snake in the chicken coop and insisted on taking it off in the woods and letting it go,the next week he was back in the coop eating eggs, since then, they all die poisonous or not..
