Alright, well, ignoring the last couple posts above this one, I'm definitely just gonna go with twist and rip in a couple of days. I really don't look forward to having to section my hair though. If I'm going for fatter dreads, instead of a bunch of thin ones, what size should each section be? Any particular way to do the sectioning or do I just start somewhere and go with it?

whenever i section someones hair for dreads i first find their hairline. after that i determine how fat they want their dreads. the standard is 1inch by 1inch sections. if you want more than average sized dreads i'd suggest going about 1.5inch by 1.5inch at least. 1inch by 1inch sectioning will give you average sized dreads. note: i did 1inch by 1inch in my sectioning, i have 68 dreads. i do not have fat dreads by any means. furthermore, you will need something to hold areas of hair during the sectioning process so that you can space sections out without other hair getting in the way. once you have your desired sectioning, count your to-be dreads! if you have a number like mine mentioned earlier, this is definitely not a good sign for aspiring to having "fat" dreads.
let me know if you haz questions
good luck and hopes this helps

One more question - when should I do them? 2 real options. I'm in college right now, but I'm going home thursday. I could do them wednesday, or i could wait til i get home and then do them. I haven't told my parents yet, so I don't know how they'll react.

personally, i would tell my parents any major event in my life before i went through with it. however, the choice is yours. hair may not be a "major" thing to some, but to me it is.

I t&r mine but didn't section them, just saw where the hair was already sectioned (I have curly hair) and t&r it loosely. om but Diton you need to relax w a :sifone: or something. How did you go from one minute 'I want my hair to find it's own way by going natural' to 'sectioning; how do I do aft dreads/think dreads' man, hair looks best when it's not thought out to much.

diton, i know this whole journey can be confusing sometimes, especially deciding how you are going to go about letting your hair lock. first, if you have the type of parents that would be concerned about your hair, figure out if you give a shit. if you do, tell them. are their opinions gonna change your mind? if so, the journey is probably not for you. also, how fast do you want to see progress? you wanted to go neglect and then decided on twist and rip? that's fine, but figure out why. you have to stay strong and have a goal if you are going to start the locking journey.

Yeah, I really do have to relax. Luxie's right I need to toke badly, I haven't since 4/20, but I need to get a job when I get home so I cut myself off in case I have to take a drug test. Really sucks though.

Did that the other day too, got completely hammered, and then remembered why I don't like drinking, and only smoke. Definitely not my drug of choice.

I could really go for some shrooms actually. I'm at a point right now where I need the insight that brings. I just bought some like a week ago, but it turned out they weren't dried out enough originally so they grew all this fuzzy mold shit. So unfortunately I'm out 40 bucks.

In the future sit them in a brown paper sack in a room with plenty of air flow out. Add a fan to the room for circulation. This will dry them properly until you decide to eat them. Once they are "cracker" dry, as in the snap when bent, they are dry enough to store. You will loose considerable weight but you could have saved them and not been out $40 had you stored them properly... Just a note so anytime you get them in the future and they are wet, you know what to do. ;)

With your hair being so short, I would rather neglect. While they are forming, your hair is growing. If you do them, your not going to like how the look in a little bit. They would be real short, and since you don't seem patient, which you need to be for just getting dreads to begin with, then you will probably get mad every week when you realize they aren't getting any longer.
