so, i wanted to start a list of terms that i use in reference to dreadlocks. this is all just an opinion, so don't get your panties in a wad! i call them locks, period. that's just me. i don't like the term dreads. crocheting: taking a needle and stitching loose hairs into a lock root flipping: taking the tip of your lock and and threading it through the root of that lock to make the roots tighter. felting: ? starting locks: i like this term vs. "making" locks b/c is not entirely accurate since locks make themselves. please feel free to add...
Very cool vig. I was thinking of starting similar to point newbs to. Great stuff. I would like to add the term ACV - apple cider vinegar and all the variations of bicarb.
Felting is using a felting needle to attach felt to felt. This can be used in dreading by attaching a felt dread to a normal hair dread, using the same needle and technique. The felting needle has small notches at the end that catch hairs and pull them from one side to the other, and vise versa. This binds the felt to the dread ^^ And is permanant... Chemigals will know more about it.
a note or two: crocheting uses a hook, not a needle. (knitting= needles, crochet= 1 hook) felting is basically what your hair does as it dreads. for example, when i crochet something made out of 100% wool (you can only felt animal hair, not cotton, acrylic, etc) and felt it I am essentially "dreading" the fibers into a felted object. this involves friction washing in hot water for an instant result, of course, but regardless of the method you use to dread your hair you are essentially "felting" your hair over a period of time. (You can also, of course, felt actual wool roving over your dreads for a fun, temporary new look (i've seen this done) but it's best not to leave it on for too long as it hinders the drying process after you've felted over your dread as it can promote rotting. )
yes, thank you for the correction hawtmamah. crochet is with a hook. sewing is with a needle and you can use this method as well. i sew some of my loops flush to my locks to help them mat into the shape i want faster.
lol... we crocheters get pretty rabid about the confusion with knitting sometimes. not a huge deal but i wanted to point it out anyway
