So I really want to let my hair dread naturally,
But I can't because my parents freak out if I don't comb it and will end up shaving my hair in my sleep. (No joke)
So I've been thinking about just twisting and ripping them cause I can't wait a couple years until I've got my own place and can do it naturally.
    Any suggestions?

What makes you thin they won't shave your head if you get insta-dreads? My suggestion is to wait, just let your hair grow long, so the minute you're out of their house, you can dread away!

They're okay with insta-dreads. I've let my hair grow fairly long already, it's about shoulder length.

Not quite, that's what I'm thinking so far. I just want to hear what other people think. Like how do most natural dreads turn out in comparison to twist and rip? If the majority turn out thicker and nicer than I'll wait it out.

I'd wait till your hair is a bit longer, i got dreads at shoulder length, and its annoying not being able to tie them up in a pony tail ( the front ones arnt long enough)

Then you could backcomb or twist n rip, and neglect from there :)

Eventually, all methods lead to the same goal- beautiful dreadie dreads... If you just can't wait, twist and rip away. Keep in mind, they look super messy for a long while.

id go for t&r method if your parents are going to be like that. freshly backcombed sections look like the statue of liberty

Bilbo- i haven't read all the replies... but i think you should just stop thnkig so hard about it and either do it or just wait it out. In my honest, humble opinion it doesn't really matter to ANYONE but YOU how and when you end up with dreads.. whether you go naturally, neglect them, twist/rip, crochet, palmroll, backcomb... WHATEVER. you do what you think is the right way for YOU. And if you are still undecided for *whatever* reason, be it your parents and their reaction, your inability to decide how and when.. whatever.. then maybe you just aren't ready to go through with this. I don't mean to sound harsh, and if i do, i apologize. I just really think you should stop stressing so much and either (pardon me...lol) shit or get off the pot, kwim? :cheers2:

    How old are you?
I think people shouldn't let their parents get in the way of wanting to do this.

    14!!
I don't care what they think,
It's just that I don't really have a choice because they will seriously shave my head while I'm asleep.

aaa. yeah that is a bit young so its understandable. I didn't start mine until I was 16.
Hmm, I would maybe just let it grow, and when your a bit older, they might see that your mature enough to know what your getting into.

It's not really a matter of how mature they think I am,
They just "Don't want their kid walking around looking like a homeless greaseball."
