Not me, although I've always planned on at least visiting someday. Most of my ancestors came from there, which isn't unusual since there are considerably more people of Irish ancestry in the United States than there are in Ireland. Times were tough there for my ancestors, but it seems like a great place to be these days.

My friend comes from Ireland! She's trying to get us to take a trip up there after our exams. Dunno if I can get the money together though. :)

My family is from New Orleans, but I've lived in Baton Rouge since I was a baby. If you're not familiar with it, it's the capital of Louisiana, about 75 miles up the Mississippi River from New Orleans. I've travelled a lot in my life and I've never been anywhere that gets as hot as it does here. Nowhere I've been has the combination of heat and humidity that we do. I suppose I'd have to go to sub-Saharan Africa or SE Asia to find someplace that does. I like vacationing somewhere cool during the summer so I can get a break from it before I go crazy and end up killing someone. Since it doesn't even come close to getting hot in Ireland, that's always sounded like a good summer destination to me. I'm planning on making a camping trip to New Mexico this year, though, so Ireland will have to wait for now.

As far as Americans with Irish blood are concerned, there certainly are a lot of us, although I doubt very much if we constitute a majority of the population. It's just that there aren't that many people in Ireland. We have about 5 million people in Louisiana and if I'm not mistaken, that's about the same as Ireland. When you consider that there are at least 15 other states with larger populations than Louisiana and all of them have lots of Irish-Americans, it kind of puts things in perspective.

Like most Americans, though, I've got ancestors who came from lots of different places. My mom's family is mostly Cajun and Creole (she's actually a direct descendant of Louis X), with some Irish and Choctaw Indian. My dad's family is a mix of Irish, Scottish and German, with the greatest part being Irish, although my last name is actually Scottish. One branch of my dad's family were Jacobite rebels who were exiled from Scotland in the 1740s and settled in Virginia. The Jacobites tended to mix with the Irish quite a lot in this country. Makes sense. Same religion, similar cultures and a mutual hatred for everything English. Of course, I don't have anything against the English these days, except the fact that their food is absolutely revolting. When it comes to food, though, I am a bit spoiled. Louisiana Creole and Cajun cuisine is, without a doubt in my mind, the best food on the planet. Not the healthiest, but we let the yuppies in California worry about that kind of crap. That's why their food tastes like styrofoam. :D
