Not the sound of me getting punched in the nuts, but...

Has anyone else heard this awful argument that people who don't have a religion - of any kind - have no morals? I find this a really appauling idea, and it seems to come mainly from people who are well-educated. I can see the logic behind it: that if someone has a religion, it's like a certificate that they've been taught the difference between right and wrong. But it relies on the idea that people never ignore their religion (a lot of American serial killers have been Christians, in spite of all that "Thou Shalt Not Kill" hooey), and that it is impossible to know right from wrong without having the fear of god(s) put into you.

    Grrr, it annoys me.

    who sais this?

i know that there are some pople who would imply this, i didnt know that it was a real 'argument'.

it realy comes down to beliving in an afterlife, or beliving in forgiveness.

but to think about it logicaly, you d not have religen then you may not have anything to have morals for, no reason. im not sating that i surport this
    though.

I fill freezers at Asda for a living and that sound makes me cringe. Just thought I'd say!
But with regards to the topic in hand, I don't believe in organised religion at all, yet I have very high morals. I definately know right from wrong. I was brought up the right way and religion had no influence on my morals.

Everyones got morals in 'em whether they like it or not... and to say your uneducated because your not relgious.. is pish. I know in my head whats right and wrong but not because of any religion.

I mean, i morally.. wouldn't kill any one. Whats your reason for not killing somone if it is for a moral reason? eh eh..

Hardly,i mean morals are just a subjective ideal that constitute what we consider good. Morals and Morality is just a set of good ideas that we hold as fundimental, nothing more. So people dont have to have morals, they could be totally objective about everything.

So why not just say we "like" things, or we believe them to be good.

because morality just leaves echo's of univerafiable moral idealism, like christianity or various others.

I dont find killing animals for meat "morally" objectional, i just dont agree with it

na i agree with dandelion, i think we all have something built into us that knows the diffrence bettwen right an wrong, somehting more than our up bringing.

i belive that a consience is something real, and not just relative to our up bringing eventhought that would be the largest influence.

i dnt mean to turn this into a religus debate, but where christianity is concirnd it lyes in the fall of man where the eyes where opend to right an wrong and we where born into this world as we know it. like you said thought its all subjective, but still i belive that the desision of what you should do is conected to the world we live in.

animals dnt realy think twice before eating eatch other [if you belive that they do think] but then again neither do we ...[the animals i mean not each other]. wow thoughts are just pouring out now, coz when you think about it we are the only animal, where there are some who chose not to live of a certain food, simply for a moral objection. they say its a dog eat dog world out there......but who has realy seen a dog eating another dog?

........whouldnt it be funny if i mave compleatly missed the plot here, like one does, an like coz of a lack of sleep iv though i was being rele clever but jus wrote a load of crap.....an everytime i thought typed the word 'animal' i was actaly saying keybab.
