James Hetfield isn't a good example here.

Fasho bro. Don't worry, I'm a little to the left myself. I believe in the art of music so I know anything goes. Shoot me a beat and I'll do it justice, that I promise.

    Not care at all.
Then ridicule them until they develop an inferiority complex.

yes, but this only applies to art. and outside of art - whatever the skill, someone can suck and continue at it without harming anyone (although in some cases it does harm - like teaching for example) which is ok as long as they are enjoying themselves. But to outwardly say fuck all opinions, i'm really great - is deluded thinking, which i think is... bad

you've said you try to improve your skill, and you also listen to constructive criticism, and i think those are 2 very good things that will make you good even if you suck ass right now.

It's all how someone presents the information too and if they're your target audience. my target audience isn;t going to like Hyphy's music and Hyphy's audience isn't going to want to buy a pink baby blanket and basil candle from me.
My crowd's goign to the U2 concert and Hyphy's crowd is looking at more urban type baby sellers with screeprinting instead of fabric prints.

Am I going to take their criticism? No, because I don;t have the creativity to match that. Is Hyphy going to take the opinion of the yuppie mom's who buy from me? No, because they're not going to be bumping his jams in their Honday oddesy or in any of the stores that carry my line.

Does it mean my stuff sucks or his music is does? No.
I think if he's getting good feedback from succesful people in the industry, he's got some skills and is good to go. I don;t think he needs to listen to people who haven't acheived his level of success because they aren't the best people to give advice from, as they have little experience.

So, it's not 'fuck opinions, I think I'm the shit, it's 'Is your opinion going to help me. Is it relevant to my goals? Where is it coming from? Is it coming from a place or help or a place of harm?'

Obsequiousness is something completely separate from objectively judging your skills.

Accepting criticism and using it to become better is of course worthwhile. I'm not advocating self delusion, I simply think the impulse of being able to brush off criticism and continue working at something is essential to getting good at anything.

If you keep skills up with an open eye on what your doing, you get a lot better.

Hard work is more important to success than being a natural.

i thought it was obvious that i meant criticism from someone who directly know what is wrong with what you're doing - can see what your weakness is. any asshole on the street can give you an opinion, im talking about people who know that you are lacking in skill. that kind of opinion, i think, shouldnt be ignored even if you're passionate, unless we're talking about some kind of hobby for pure pleasure, not meant to be put out publicly

That's not necessary at all. I just ment I think he's a bad vocalist. I liked him the best before he was trying different things with his voice :D

How is this different from what I'm saying? I never said talent can't be cultivated by hard work, of course it can. I'm saying that just because someone says you're not as great as you think you are, doesnt mean you should brush it off and not take their opinion seriously, just because youre "passionate." i keep repeating myself it seems, i'm done now.

I must have miss read if that's what you meant. Relevant criticism from knowledgable parties is always such a great gift. I had am editor on gift giving from Family Circle Magazine do a critique of my shop after being 'runner up' twice for being featured in their magazine (once for age and once because my pictures on my site sucked). After taking their advice I finally made a profit after thinking of quitting.
I also send out samples of products still in development with all of my orders. I always ask for advice on bettering the products, buy everyone just always tells me it's great and is thankful for a free gift. It's very frustrating.
It's not just if the person is qualified, for me it's where it's coming from. Is it coming from a place of truly wanting me to succeed, either because you love me or love people to be happy, or is it coming from an empty place inside of you?

Funny, We were just talking about that last night and how his voice has changed over he years. I actually think he is an amazing vocalist. I actually had no idea how good until recently. I mean I always loved his singing but didnt realize that the guy actually sings very well.

The only time it really happened, I was 16, and very very impressionable...so I quit. I have hardly sang at all since then, and it's a real shame, because I wasn't terrible and I'd be better now, had I not quit for all those years. But I had more reasons than that to quit with music, and I became mediocre at acting after that. haha

    I would do nothing....

Cause to them maybe it does suck, but I digress...

And still wouldn't care what they say, even if they are close to me..

Would continue on like I have been...

Now, if the overwhelming consensus was that I was wack, then sure, I'd hang em up and only do it as a hobby instead or pursuing it as a profession. The thing is, it's the opposite. Theres only a small few who squeeze a lemon and give me no reason. It's like the Tech N9ne syndrome, getting hated on because he does shit other rappers can't do so they dismiss it as wack. Fucking retarded.
