Dead squirrel still haunting Navy base April 7, 8:52 PM Norfolk Military Affairs Examiner A certain deceased squirrel is still driving the U.S. Navy nuts. More than a week ago, a squirrel came in contact with a power transformer at the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station in eastern Virginia. The resulting electrocution killed the critter and blew out the transformer. The resulting explosion damaged a key component of the base phone system, interrupting service to the entire base, which is the primary weapons storage and handling facility for the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. Since then, naval technicians and civilian contractors have struggled to restore service to the installation. In the interim, base personnel have relied on cell phones, mobile radios and e-mail to communicate. By late Monday, most of the weapons station had local dialing capability, according to Mark Piggott, a spokesman for the base. He said other services, including call forwarding and voice mail, remain unavailable. But reaching the installation by phone remains problematic. Callers to parts of the base--including Cheatham Annex near Williamsburg--were still greeted with busy signals. Piggot said said that fixing the problem requires the manual re-loading of software and extensive system testing. Those requirements are one reason that some base facilities are still without working phones. Navy officials did not offer a price tag for the repair job, which included a new transformer and phone equipment. Management analysts estimated the phone outage cost the service thousands of dollars in lost worktime and productivity--beyond the cost of fixing the phone system... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCrRXL7p8zo&feature=related Operator is rare on youtube..
