It pisses me off, because for the past four years of my life, i have considered myself a hippie... Now, in my senior year in high school, i am seeing peace sign t-shirts, and people pretending to have hippie ideals, hendrix and beatle shirts at jcpenny, and just about anyone who smokes a joint here and there considers themselves a hippie...

GOD DAMN IT PEOPLE, THIS IS HOW I LIVE MY LIFE, DONT TAKE IT AND MAKE IT A FUCKING FAD!

I get grouped in with these kids too.. People think that because i dress the way i do, im just following the crowd... fuckin pisses me off...

i know there are hippies that are teenagers out there, who arent just in it for the fashion, but there are none in greenville michigan.

Eh, the best thing you could do is to ignore it. And besides, even if they are doing it for a fad, is it really all that bad if for a short time they believe in the same ideals as you and I? As annoying as it may be, I don't think its really a bad thing.

dude, thats not very cool. you're kinda not being very chill or loving of people, which isn't very hip or even hippie. why don't you re-examine your position on these kids, cuz they're just kids... you know, immitation is the somehing kind of flattery.

    douche bag. ;)

i guess it just goes back to my hatred of mainstream america. the subculture should stay the subculture while the mainstream does their ignorant thing... and its just annoying because these people try to relate with me, but i can see through their fakeness. kind of like my hatred for emo/goth kids.. you just do it to be different and cool.

    Think of it like...
If their being trendy, at least it's a good trend to follow.
It's like this whole "green" trend that has people buying hybrid cars and growing gardens and using less electricity and taking shorter showers and not using plastic shopping bags.
It may be a trend, but at least it's a good trend.

i guess true that. im just not used to people doing things that are good. so even when they do good things, they are still doing it badly because they are doing it for the wrong reasons... meh, w/e

I used to see that a lot when I was in school. I'd ask a person who has peace signs all over if they know who the Dead are and they just said no... Tragic.

The great thing about fads is they change quickly. :)

Are you sure, completely and positively sure, that it isn't a fad for you as well?

    Maybe less than for them.

But think about it. Take a good look at your life. The way you behave, the way you dress, the things you purchase, the acts you do, the way you interact, and so on.

I'm not saying that it doesn't have to seem natural to your character.

But honestly... just think about it.

I'd also suggest coming back to this post in a year or two and laughing in your own face.

it seems like what you are saying is that now that the "crowd" has caught up with the whole classic rock, drugs, getting lost in the mind fad you are getting mad because you aren't the only one following the "no trend" trend. just be free, you don't have to dress any particular way or do any particular things to be considered a hippie. just love yourself and others, be hip, be cool.

...Hippie trend as well as a dreadlock trend.
You say it's something good to follow, but they're still just following.

hey Topher? maybe it is just a fad right now to a lot of those folks but perhaps for some it'll become more than just a cool fashion statement, maybe the ideals will take root and grow. maybe some will find depth and meaning and become real in it. try to be more patient and forgiving with posers. sometimes we fake it till we make it.

Everything is a fad. I can't think of many things that we do that are truly original, unique, or independent. You could consider all sorts of things fads when you think about it. The trend to marry after finding someone you really, really love. The trend to have a family with them. Trends for everything we do in daily life. Even within the hippie culture we follow what others do. Because hippies collectively seem to like Jimi Hendrix and Grateful Dead, most hippies feel the need to like them too, even when they might otherwise not.

Yes, I'm annoyed by the recent hippie fad, much in the same way that I stopped liking Green Day because it became mainstream. However, I'd rather take in a small wave of new hippies from this recent revival, even if it's just a small portion of these apparent "posers". It could do the Earth some good.

I can understand Tophers frustration but it really serves no purpose. Although it may be part of a trend you are complaining about and judging people here exactly the way you don't wanna be classified neither. You don't know why all those people wear those things, they think you're like them without knowing you and you say you're different (original? ;) just think about it) without knowing them. Typical group thinking in my opinion.

Who's a subculture tool here exactly? Are people obliged to know the Dead if they want to show around the peacesign?

Well man, how can you think of yourself as being an openminded person if you make bullshit stands like this? If you still look at people as if they are nothing more then the subculture they look most like. Not every hippie wants revolution or likes Jefferson Airplane and not every emo or goth is an emo or goth just to be different or cool. Neither a hippie, emo or goth is just a hippie, emo or goth.

Indeed, no-one is solely their look or their label(s). Remember that if you're rocking the style of your fav subculture you're technically in the same boat as the ones you are so eager to look upon as emo's or goths and also fellow and/or 'fake' hippies.

Personally, I'm pretty fucking stoked that I can find stuff with peace signs all over because I kind of live in buttfuck nowhere and we only have chain stores, and I really just like the peace sign. Honestly, I haven't seen anyone who isn't pretty groovy to begin with wearing any of that stuff anyway.

Yeah haha, if you look like it the other way it seems pretty weird to hate on those who like the same things as you :D (if we would just forget about fads)
