    evening all!

ive been a knitter for a few years now, and im just learning to crochet. right now, im learning to crochet in rounds, and im trying to make a hat. i have tried and tried all day, and have nothong to show for it but a pile of tiny things that look like barbie hats or one glove finger!
anyone know where im going wrong? i get the first circle fine, then after that my rounds just go all wierd and small!

    thanks in advance.

ps, i am a beginner, and i realise there's probably a very simple reason as to why/where im going wrong, so bare with me please!
pps, im tired, so this may not make sense!

you have to increase the number of stitches exponentially. say, if your first round is 10 st, the second one should be 20 st, the next should be 30 st and so on. for the second round, put 2st in each st. for the third round, put 2st in every other st. and continue until you have the size hat you want and put 1st in each st for however many rows. did that help? i think thats what you were asking...

i bought a ridicously expensive book, but i find it terribly hard to learn from books, i need to be shown visually! so my boyfriend learnt from the book then tought me.
theres loads of videos on youtube, showing the basics, once you get started its pretty simple : )
just get a hook and some wool and search youtube and soon youll be crocheting everything!

I've been having problems crocheting a hat also. Except my problem wasn't the same as yours. Mine was just round... lol. And it had a weird point on the top. I put the project aside for awhile to start crocheting a blanket (which is so far, successful).

I taught myself by videos on the internet. Although, the the videos will show you how to do the stitches but not how to turn rows. So just remember to make a couple chains on the end of each row, depending on what stitch you're doing. Like, I'll do one for a single crochet, two for a double crochet, etc. Other than that, its pretty easy. I think a lot easier and faster than knitting, but it just kind of depends on the look you're going for.

There are some good video tutorials on www.nexstitch.com . I taught myself how to crochet last summer from a book and videos but I started taking a crochet class about a month ago and that REALLY helped. Now I'm addicted! I LOVE it! I can't wait to teach my kids.

After reading this post the first time, I got inspired to try crocheting a hat, again. And I finished it and it looks fine. I just ended up making it a little too big (as in long) and I wasn't quite sure how to end it, so I just always put that part in the back when I wear it because it looks jagged.

But what I did was chained 3, and then did a slip stitch to connect them. Then I think I chained 1 and did 4 V Double Crochet stitches. And then after that, I quit chaining and I would increase exponentially between my V Stiches. So like, I would do one double crochet between V Stitches, and then would do 2, and then 3, etc. until I reached 7. And after that, I just did double crochets the rest of the way down. I don't know if that's how you're supposed to do it, but it worked for me. Just still not sure how to finish it off without it looking jagged.
