first make sure that your hardware is recognized by the system... i am quite a linux guy so my familiarity with Microsoft stuff is limited but i suggest you to look in the control panel if still there is one (i quit with MS in 1999) and look for system configuration to see if your sound card is acknowledged (but since sound isn't disabled and you have a mixer in the system tray i suppose that the card is at least partially installed and working).
if not the card could be misconfigured or just plain wasted. maybe IRQ conflicting ? also, are you sure that the sound card is connected to a working speaker set? try with a pair of headphones or with a spare set of working speakers to exclude this silly occurrence. a card can be recognized and installed but not actually doing the job if the SPK OUT 3,5 mm jack port is broken or not connected. are you sure that the speakers are connected to the correct little hole in your sound card and not for instance to the MIC IN hole? troubleshooting requires to discard all the possibilities so you can size down the circle until only the correct solution remains.
if this fails make sure that the card is properly inserted in the slot, eventually remove it and reboot the computer. then shut it up again and reinsert the card. you may want to clean the contacts with an erasing gum before reinstalling the card. reboot again. a message should pop up warning you of the new hardware, and asking for a driver. at this point you are pretty sure that the card isn't fried.
try driverguide.com -if you cant download the driver directly from the manufacturer's home site- and install it. hope this helps.

if you have vista running on a presario, then you are luck it even works. Compaq was sucked up by HP yeas ago and anything branded "Compaq" is way pre-vista. There probably are no official vista drivers for that specific machine since it either shipped with XP or Win 2000.

Also, most presario machines had integrated sound on the motherboard. Are you sure it has an audio card?? Take the cover off carefully, and see where the speakers plug into the machine. If the jacks are on the motherboard, you have integrated audio. If not, you have a drop in sound card (like soundblaster) or a rare Compaq board with the esoniq chipset. If the board has a serial number eneding in -001 then its a true compaq part, which is now HP...

Contact HP. You will need the serial and the Compaq specific model number. Sometimes its on the bottom of the machine. i dont know if it is still in service but HP kept the 1800-ok-compaq phone number for the few people that bought extended warranties.

The "quick restore" cd from compaq will put the machine back to factory specs, but if you have an add-in sound card, there will NOT be a driver for audio on it.

You need to find out EXACTLY the make and model + serial number of the sound card (if there is one) for support. feel free to take a picture of the inside of the machine and send it to me. I cant offer farther assistance until I know what you have.

I checked. YOur machine has an integrated audio system on the motherboard. There are known issues with the audio device. But are ya SURE you are running vista and not XP?? It should have shipped with XP and the restoration CD would put it back to XP even if you managed to get vista running.

The XP driver for it is from a seperate company as compaq did not manufacture the chips in the system. Google "Realtek ALC888" and obtain the driver there. Many of compaqs machines had the realtek chip in them and HP will probably tell you to get it from realtek. Compaq does not exist any more, it was bought out by HP, so the support they offer is going to suck.
