''This letter [http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/letters/chi-090423leving_briefs,0,7088568.story] to the editor gives readers a window on how domestic violence in this country is reported (Chicago Tribune, 4/23/09). It's from Jeffery Leving, Chairman of the Illinois Council on Responsible Fatherhood. Apparently he was interviewed by a reporter for the Tribune for an article on supervised child visitation centers. While expressing his pleasure at having been interviewed, Leving goes on to say that the article "deleted the two fundamental points that I made." The first of those was that "domestic violence is not gender specific." To be clear, the reporter, Megan Twohey, interviewed Leving and he told her an important fact about DV. That important fact did not make it into the article. So, when reading DV articles in the future, be aware that the reporter and editor may actually know the facts. Indeed, interviewees may have told them the facts about DV in so many words. But the almost total boycott by the MSM of any mention of domestic violence done by women to men remains in place. In other words, some journalists may be ignorant of basic facts, but ignorance doesn't explain the absence of those facts from press accounts of DV. Even when they know the truth, they refuse to admit it. That's not ignorance, that's a conspiracy of silence. Don't believe me? Here's the article Leving was complaining about (Chicago Tribune, 4/20/09) [http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-safe-havens-20apr20,0,635902.story?page=1]. It includes two incidents of severe domestic violence including parental kidnapping. Both perpetrators were men. If you've never read Noam Chomsky and Edward Hermann's Manufacturing Consent, now might be a good time to do so. The MSM's almost total disregard of the basic facts of DV are a classic example of what the book is about." [Article taken from: http://www.glennsacks.com/blog/ ] As usual, the media goes out of its way to vilify men and use deception to portray women as always being victims. A tiresome charade - one that will continue if men don't stand up and demand a little accountability from their news and entertainment sources.
It's this whole skewed idea of gender roles that we have now. Half of the world (government included) want to view men and women how they once were, the women as the weaker force, incapable of doing wrong and then become completely shocked when they do something like kill their husband or their child (thinking about Casey Anthony in this case). Then they view men as these buffed up, stronger, more able to be cruel type who rule the home and money. This might have been more truthful, a hundred years ago, but today, women have just as much fault as the men and are capable of the same crimes/offenses. I've watched some of my closest guy friends deal with abusive relationships, controlling girlfriends and I've watched some of my female friends act that way. We get away with it because we can blame it on emotional instability or the greatest one, PMS and to me that's wrong. If a woman is abusive towards a man, she should deal with the same consequences and a guy shouldn't get flack for being a "pussy" either. I think if we're a society bent on changing the gender roles, then it should apply to everything, not just a few things here and there.
^Well put In general, anything dealing with gender in today's world is pretty fucked up, but I would guess it is due to a time of transitioning.
i am very concerned about male victims of domestic violence. i've known of cases where men have been dominated and exploited, but they were too intimidated to reach out for help. (not always abused by women though, by the way.)
I just don't get how men can be ignored in this case... I have more sympathy for them then abused women, and it's probably because you don't hear about it. I've known abused men, too, who were afraid to speak out. And people say we've reached equality... no fucking siree.
Here's a handy slef defense guide agianst women. http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/7332/selfdefense.jpg
And then be arrested for domestic violence! Honestly, while I'm all for equality of the sexes, equality between male/female right now is a god damn sham. We've gone from a male dominated society to a male dominated society that gets sued a lot by angry lesbos. Before we can have true equality we need to get rid of our social norms involving sex. Women need to pay half the bill, women need to open the door for us, women children AND men need to get off the sinking boats. Men can be sued for sexual harassment but men also have to foot the bill on so many things for women. Equality my ass. Look at nature, the two sexes fulfill two EXTREMELY important roles. Males help make babies, hunt, and protect their land/mates Females help make babies, hunt, and nurse their young. Since when did the concept of motherhood become so distasteful to women today? I've always appreciated women because they are amazing parents (Some...) and go through the process of childbirth. There is a reason the world is made up of two sexes and half-male half-female things.
