i'm currently thinking about recreation and park management.

i'd like to work in a park again, but in a higher paid position than before.

Yeah. Some are told from early on that its "doctors and lawyers are the only clever ones".Plus they profit from bickering rather than pragmatism and problem solving.

I mean some businessmen can be arrogant tits too.But they've realised that it takes more than "just academic rules" to solve things.
Lawyers don't tend to learn that as much as other professions. So lawyers can be a bit backstabberish/ intellectual vain and ultimately just annoying sometimes.
I sort of feel like lawyers are frustrated and repressed arrogant.Like they never grew up, in a way.

( pot calling the kettle black, some people might say...:D)

I don't meet many lawyers who *love* their job.

Oncology. Or emergency medicine. Especially trauma.

But I'll probably change my mind.

English & education, neither of which are leading to jobs that I still want to do, but I will teach for a while until I go back to school to do something completely different

Sociology which is probably one of the most useless majors along with philosophy.

Yeah... honestly... switch is as soon as you can.

I'm stuck with English... and honestly... fuck it.

The only good thing that came out of it for me was a strong appreciation for pre-modern English writing.

the only thing that truly benefitted me, i think, is that it made me a pretty good writer. which is something that i developed on my own, through writing all those papers. I only saw my capability after becoming an english major. And what else... i can analyze the shit out of a poem. which is a skill, but afterwards its kind of unfulfilling, like all that time i spent analyzing and writing.. as good as it is, its doesnt do much for me in the end. FML is what i kept saying the past 2 years. like you know you have developed a pretty good skill, but there isnt anywhere in the real world to apply it

Yeah... hell, I can spit out a great 10 page research paper/essay in a couple of hours, but like you've said, it doesn't really help.

At the same time, I've always felt that my English major only limited my creative writing... my teachers would always criticize my papers for being too wordy and not clear enough. I guess they're not big on the same metaphors and symbolism they try to illustrate in class.

    I hate academia.

I quit school because I hated my major - English education. My mom made me choose between teaching or nursing. I hate both, so I wasted time in school taking classes that I enjoyed that had nothing to do with my major. I also hated that I was forced to take classes where I already knew the information and couldn't miss more than a couple of days without failing, and no I wasn't allowed to test out of the class.

the only thing - and i mean the only thing that kept me at the school i went to was my friends

if i went to any run of the mill school, i'd have said fuck it - and believe me, i had the conversation plenty of times, especially with a member of this board - i would have left. but our bond was worth fighting through those years...and getting my god awful huge ass ring

education wise...i should have been much much smarter...oh well

No offense, but I don't understand how parents have control over what you go to school for. I mean, if they are paying for it I could see that, in a way.. but still, they should be understanding and let you pick what you would love to do.

They paid what my grant didn't cover. They let me piss away time and grant money on subjects I enjoy. Neither one of my parents would let me choose to study to be an archaeologist or an artist. (The two things that interest me.) I wouldn't even go to school for art. My parents just wanted me to major in something that would guarantee a stable job.

Recreational Management might be another option. You're good with that athletic stuff and have a knack for business also. It sounds like a enjoyable way to make a living. You could be a boating or swimming instructor or a body building trainer. :)
