I left site 2 days ago. Word came I believe on the 10th that consensus was for a loosely defined area called either "Mid-Atalntic" or "The Appalachains", or, in other words, West Coast Family will have to drive 3500 miles next year.

Hi All! I've been back, but haven't navigated to this cyberspace yet...

Yeah, MidAtlantic is fine! Good for all who stayed at VC and I hope it's Virginia!!! I actually spent a while talking to a brother from Virginia who promised me he would scout if VC included his state, which I guess it does. I will check out a map myself, he said there would be room right next to the App Trail, not much but this year was squeezed into 4 sq miles, and that there were springs, and that it was above 5000 feet, which are all considerations. I hope him and others step up or yes it prob. will be in PA.

Hey, I've got a couple of pics in the galleries, and I gotta go-- this crazy site is hard to find I bookmarked so I will be back! :)

"We the Rainbow Family of Living Light, gathering on the Land in
California in 2004, concense that the 2005 Rainbow Family of Living
Light will gather in the greater mid-Atlantic bio-regions AND that if
private land becomes available for other functions such as
Thanksgiving Council, or Spring Council, etc., it will be utilized if
    the people choose it."

Concensus was reached by first having the above read to those present
and then asking for concensus by passing the feathers all the way
around the circle in silence. -woodstock-

Fun thread that tries to define "Mid-Atlantic".

if somebody can hit me up with some info on what i'm looking for while scouting for a site i'd be happy to do some hiking, i think the blue ridge smokies area would be excellent. thats my ancestral cherokee land. any appalachian family down with scouting? i'm all about steppin up.

    Hi Spore-
Scouting is pretty basic, but "pitching" your site (if you find one) is where it gets tough come Spring Council. It is imperative to have photos and topo maps or the high holy types will shoot you down, and probably go to PA , not to be pessimistic or anything but I've been there, you can look at the archives of agr on google groups and read all about Utah.
Anyway, there needs to be a road to, but preferably not through your site. Preferably a good road in, one that can handle busses, and a second road that can be rough but can serve as a "back door" for emergencies and supply. So somewhere on this road in there needs to be areas for many thousands of cars to park. Ok, now there has to be land preferably above the freeze line (for less bugs and impact) of at least 4 squares on the topo that is National Forest and no conflicts with private land. Topos show in colors what these are, but in scouting the land make sure no private land is even really visible or there can be problems. Now this land needs to have: springs (not seeps but good gushing springs, sometimes these are marked on topo sometimes not), meadows (at least one big enough for main circle but more is good for choice), downed wood so no one is tempted to cut live trees. Oh, and no riparian zones, or marshland, or endangered species. That is probably it. :) Again, a good search going to google, then groups, then alt.gathering.rainbow and search that group for "scouting" and you'll see info. You might want to try to make Thanksgiving Council cause scouts might be there, do a shout out for Sailor there cause he scouted last years' site.
None of this is meant to discourage, scouting is hard but really fun! Hit up local drum circles and councils for magic hat money for gas and film and stuff.

It's all one word: WoodWaterMeadows. Plenty of down & dead wood for fires & construstion material, good springs, and meadows for parking & Main Circle. It's the meadows part that is lacking in the Southern Appalachains. Perhaps you should look at the old '87 site near Robinsville, NC, as an example of, as I understand it, I wasn't there, a rather poor site that the Family made work. "North Carolina Near Tapoco, in Nantahala National Forest. It`s on the Tapoca quadrangle. " is the closest description of the location of that site I could find on WelcomeHome. Remember, we are looking at National Forrests, not National Parks. The Smokey Mtns Natnl Park is out of the question. The Parks Service has a whole 'nother set of laws from the USFS.

I believe Thanksgiving Council will be somewhere in Virginia. Perhaps if you can make that, you can hook up with some other folks who will be scouting. I'll post dirrections to Thanksgiving Council as soon as I get them.

NB since the Permit regs have in and of themselves failed to stop the Gatherings USFS has been using dubious claims of endangered species, (Idaho)
archaeological sites, (Michigan), and Native American "Holy Places" (California) to discourage Gatherings.
