My mom, brother and myself have all decided to quit smoking. We've all known that it's bad for us, obviously, especially my brother who has asthma, but none of us has wanted to quit enough yet. My brother came back from Tampa and was only smoking 1 ciggarette a day, but being around us again, he got back up to where he was. We are all just under a pack a day. But when we found out that ciggs are going to go way up in price, we decided that it was time we gave it up. Our plan is, we buy a carton of ciggarettes each and when those are gone, we're done. We haven't officially "started" quitting, but I've started slowing down. From almost a pack a day to about 4-5 ciggs a day just this week. And already those few that I have aren't as good as they used to be. I'm starting to get, not sick, but uncomfortable about halfway through the ciggarette. I get light headed and out of breath. I think I'm going to be able to do this. But I could use all the support I can get. Usually when I'm trying to quit something, I don't tell people, I don't want people to know if I fail. So I'm making myself accountable to all of you. If I fail at this, people from all over the world will know. I'm pretty stubborn, so if I know that people are gonna know if I fail, I will do all that I can to make sure that doesn't happen. I will keep you all updated.
In a 10 hour shift at work, I usually smoke 5 ciggarettes, today I smoked 2. Wish me luck, I'm gonna need it.

    Good luck.

    Tried it myself.
    Failed.
Now I just smoke if I am having a beer.
I can get through most things with out a cig (work etc)
But drinking! That drags (pardon the pun) me back.
To be honest...cigs are apparently only the 9th reason your gonna die of cancer.
Char grilling food is a lot worse.
I just try and keep all this drama about smoking in perspective.

My grandpa died two years ago of lung cancer and heart failure. We still suspect that the lung cancer is Agent Orange related, but he did also smoke. In my family I have cancer, diabetes and heart disease. I figure I need to do all that I can to drop my odds, cause they're pretty big. I've become vegan, which the health reasons were part of the selling points on that decision. I also don't spend much time out in the sun unless I'm protected properly. Which means that I'm the only Floridian without colour. But I do what I can. Price is mostly the thing that pushed me to quit on the ciggs though. They are supposed to go up about $1.35 in the next couple months here.

    Good grief...sorry to hear that.
It probably is a good thing to narrow the odds in your case.
I probably have similar issues dotted around my family tree...but I think I try and ignore that.
If it is price, then that is a good valid reason.
However, cost was one of my issue...so what do the cig companies do?...
Sell lower quality cheaper cigs...and I - like a mug - buy them.
Don't lower your standards - just stop (if you can).

That's what we were doing, for a year. These "cheap" ciggarettes are going to be almost $4 when the price goes up. That's about how much the big brand ciggs were when I started smoking them about 5 years ago. That's not good.

Oh dear...so did I for a while.
Now I just smoke roll ups...cheaper and erm "healthier" (not so many chemicals.)
I hope you mission is accomplished...I truly do.

there is only one rule about quitting cigarette smoking...

1.you can smoke as many as you want until you quit. once you quit, you can never ever smoke again.

it might seem plainly obvious, but if you don't follow this one rule you haven't quit.

I smoke rollies too. The way I justify it is by only purchasing select flavors and gourmet brands. I'll never settle for cheap rolling tobacco because the god stuff gets me more buzz and more flavor without all those nasty chemicals.

Good luck Tisha. I know exactly how hard it is to quit. I've relapsed once or twice but that's to be expected. Don't beat yourself up over it and get back on track. It's completely worth it.

It's just the nicotine and less chemicals with me.
I'm not the kinda person who would or could go into a tobacconists and ask for this or that.

That's one thing that I have to keep out of my mind. If I start thinking "never", then I'll just lose the will. Never seems like way to long for me to commit to. I just need to think in, "I'm done, I don't need them anymore, they're always there if I need them, but I won't." I think "never" and I'm almost sure to fail.
Thanks to all of you for your support. I feel like this is something that I can do if I really want to.

I've tried quitting numerous times but can't seem to do it. I would reccommend prescription quitting aids like Chapix. My dad quit after 40 years of smoking.

i went almost a year having virtually cut them entirely out. my health improved significantly in this time. then eventually i started having one every week or two, which was fine. but eventually it got away from me and i was smoking on a regular basis again.

after about 3-4 months of daily heavy smoking, my health was back to being as bad as it was when i last "quit"

now i'm on day three of cold turkey. my addiction luckily hasn't been restored nearly as fully as my respiratory issues, but its still hard to quit. its not nearly as difficult as previous attempts, though. luckily (?) i'm also pretty sick with either a nasty cold or a mild flu, so its easier to not want to smoke.

anyway, good luck, but if you're allowing yourself "one last carton" rather than one last pack, or the rest of your pack, or one last cigarette....you'll need a lot of luck.

in my experience it takes a lot of tries to learn how it works best for you, but each attempt seems to get easier and longer in duration if you're dedicated enough. if you lapse, don't beat yourself up, just get back on track.

in my experience patches leave me more addicted to nicotine because it is so constantly administered. it also made me deathly ill the first time.

gum i found better, but took more willpower. with gum you can wait as long as possible before you're about to kill someone and then have a piece. you'll still want a cigarette, but it will be just enough nicotine to help you manage your craving. it takes less willpower than cold turkey.

cold turkey i've found most effective, though. i also find it is easiest if i cut back a bit for a day or two first, and time it just right so that i run out of my last pack at night. otherwise, throw or give away the rest of a pack, or destroy them, before going to bed. i have NEVER been able to wake up as a regular smoker with a cigarette or two and quit that same day. cold turkey, for me, has to start upon waking....i can't just stop smoking midday.

anyway, good luck. and if at first you dont succeed, try some more.

I just quit weed cold turkey and its day 4 now. I have been doing it daily for years. Its just way more addicting for me. I smoke tobacco on occasions but never been addicted. Partly because i hate the taste and i feel sick if i do it more than rarely. Gl to quitting the cancer sticks.

that can be difficult, too, but having plenty of experience with both its not even close to the same for me or for anyone i know.

without weed, at worst, one gets a little bit grumpy.

i've known people to beat heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine habits - none of these people were able to quit smoking cigarettes.

yeah, weed can be addictive, but more along the lines of how chocolate, tea, or coffee, and unlike coffee, chocolate or tea, weed has an almost entirely psychological addiction with no actual withdrawal symptoms.

cigarette addiction is more akin to the hold that substances like painkillers, heroin, meth, and coke....

i can quit smoking pot easily, no matter how much i smoke for a while. used to smoke an eighth a day, but i haven't smoked weed in weeks, and while i'd like to it really doesnt bother me.

Try just quitting one day at a time. Decide not to smoke today. Don't think about tomorrow until it gets here. Each morning get up and decide not to smoke for that day.

I wouldn't use that chantix. I don't want to risk going psycho. My mom quit cold turkey 20 years ago. But her ass husband got her to start up again. One of the reasons I'm quitting is to make it easier on my mom. I would do anything to keep from losing her too soon.
When we found out the prices were going up we decided to get a carton before they did. But then I just said, well, why not just not smoke after that's gone. It's not a "last carton", or at least I'm not thinking about it that way. It's, we're not going to buy anymore after that, so I may as well slow down and make it easier on myself.
I can easily go from smoking like crazy to not having any for a long time. It has no addictive attributes for me. I just really like it.
What I've been doing is, today I have to wait 3 hours between ciggs, tomorrow 4, then 5, and so on. Till I finally don't even care, it's been long enough between ciggs that I don't crave the next. You know? And I don't just smoke every 3 or 4 hours. That's just the minimum wait time. If I don't want one, I wait longer until I do want one.

Yeah i guess i can't say much about it since iv'e never been addicted to it, and i guess i just can't comprehend what a physical addiction is like. I have before smoked cigs every day for like a week straight and i had no problem forgetting about them after that. I think it really just depends on your brain chemistry or something and my mind works differently because i have never been addicted to anything except weed. Don't get me wrong cigs feel awesome to be on, but it can't compare to thc thc just feels like magic every time i take the fattest hit that beginning headrush is just priceless.
Ive also tried coke, and i was doing it as much as i possibley could that day i had like 20 lines. I just decided since i was doing it i might as well go all the way. After that i never touched it, mabey my subconcious thinks about that stuff harder than i do and protects me from the dangerous addictions.

I'm down to 3-4 ciggarettes a day! Getting easier and easier to wait between ciggarettes.
