Lately The Soles Of My Feet Don't Seem To Be As Tough As They Always

Have Been, And Feel More Sensitive.

So I Put Some Methylated Spirits In A Shallow Tray, And When I Am On

My Puuuter, I Soak My Feet In It....

Seems To Be Working Quite Well, Apart From The Prominent "Wino" Smell

That Fills The House, And Follows Me Everywhere..:D.

    Has Anybody Else Tried This..??

    Cheers Glen.

no i have never tried it. it makes sense thought, the alcohol in it, is an irritant that rots the liver, so it would dry out the skin, making the skin less sensitive.

you might want to call your primary care physician, and talk to them about your feet being sensitive. for some people. that is the first symptom of pre-onset diabetes. most likely your health is just fine. it is better safe then sorry when dealing with diabetes though!

Sounds like the old trick of soaking conkers in vinegar. But I can't stand vinegar, and alcohol when is left to go off becomes vinegar. I think I'll toughen my feet the old fashioned way. But if you like vinegar then go for it!

Yeah, be careful since the spirits are methylated. When ingested, methanol has significant toxicity, so I'd imagine that you'd get an attenuated version of that with subcutaneous (through the skin) exposure.

:iagree: ditto bige, i was about to say that. also, the ability of our skin to absorb toxic substances should never be underestimated.

Welcome Back To The World Of Barefooting makihiko.:cheers2:.

I Just Wanted to Correct A Little Mistake In Your Post.

I Am Using "Methylated Spirits" NOT Vinegar.

Methylated Spirits Are 95 Percent Ethanol, And Have Been Used As An

Disinfectant And Antiseptic For Umpteen Years.

Since I Created This Thread, I Have Spoken To My Chemist About

    Any Possible Side Effects.

No Problems, Unless You Want To Fill Up The Bath And Lie In It For Hours.

The Title Of This Thread Came From The Fact That Years Ago "Winos"

Quite Often (and still do) Drink Methylated Spirits Because It Is Cheap And

Easily Available From Supermarkets And Hardware Stores etc.

In Fact Some Years Ago Here In Australia The Authorities Put A Limit Of

1 Litre On Metho Sales, Hoping To Slowdown The Practice Of Drinking It.

One Thing I Forgot To Put In My Original Post, Was That Being An

Disinfectant And Antiseptic It Is Great For Treating Those Little (and not

so little) Nicks And Cuts We Get And Sometimes Are Not Even Aware Of

Till The Metho Makes Them Sting.

When I Was A Little Kid, Metho Was Always Used In Household Medicine.

    Keep Em Bare..:D.

    Cheers Glen.

Don't overdo it with the meths, as hard dry skin is more prone to cracking, which is a Bad Thing. I find that eating oily fish, such as sardines and mackerel, combined with flaxseeds and plenty of fruit and veg (not all at the same time!) keeps the skin supple and tough.
I ran into a similar problem to you, which i put down to age, but this diet helped a lot.
