This thread has veered so far off topic I don't think there's a good answer. ...and I'm not naming names!
I do have a question, is it possible (well, I know it's possible, I just know it could be needlessly hard, and I don't know HOW needlessly hard because I haven't looked at phpbb in so long it's unworth mentioning) to simply remove report post from RT? I mean, honestly, all it does is give skip and you, and the super-mods headaches, it's a great tool, but there is the possibility it's getting abused too. as much as we have people who are outrageous, and, this dynamic always exists, we do have people who are a bit tattle tale-ee I TRY to only use the report post button on obvious spam. but, when it's used for personal stuff, and most of the people in the microcommunity don't see it that way, and one or two do, it becomes easy to see them as victims, when they might be swinging as passive aggressively, or as virulently as anyone else. and I know there are too many posts to wade through. (I'm only posting this here, because this is the closest we've gotten to a town hall in awhile, and so I figured I'd go for it)
No-- it's very useful and does enable some moderation. It does get abused some... but I'm not getting into that The problem is NOT the presence of "report post" buttons- trust me, if folks have it in their mind to involve a moderator in their petty squabbles, they will find a way. It's really up to the judgment of the mod whether or not to act on a report. I am reluctant to involve myself with the personal spats that take place as even when measuring how carefully I react what I do almost always makes things worse-- no matter what it is that I do.
wow all this because i told someone to shut the fuck up if they couldnt stay on topic (a forum guideline mind you ) in my thread. and after they report my post and stir the pot for several pages afterwards they come in in several more pages and act like they did nothing? im sorry but i call that troll behavior.at the very least it was off topic.in fact i see the very first post of theirs in this thread as trolling as everyone else previously had agreed that names wouldnt be used to avoid a popularity contest, not to mention the fact that THAT WASNT THE QUESTION. in the end it seems they got what they desired. a phrase comes to mind for this kind of behavior but if i used it it would be a actual personal attack so i will abstain. so what am i suppossed to do to avoid this in the future? just let them post whatever they want in my threads off topic or not?? how is that fair? you see what they accomplished in this thread. i just dont get it.. maybe i will just begin to report every post of theirs that i see as a violation of guidelines. in fact maybe we all should, let them get a taste of their own medicine.. whos with me? shouldnt be hard to catch them off topic. after all thats what started this bullshit.
Shit 16's legal where I live. . . :leaving: (Sorry if this thread had made it back on topic after 3 pages
I'm not 100%, seeing as I'm no model citizen, but I would guess the proper approach is to report it without the scene. If you would've ignored her and reported it, Stinky(or others) could've removed her off topic posts(when it was far fewer off topic posts from anybody) and shot her a PM saying "no no". But because people engaged, it became a bigger deal that Stinkfoot obviously does not want to waste time cleaning up, and your thread is ruined. The problem with what happened today is that as Stinkfoot pointed out earlier, there were enough participants. People can't tango by themselves, folks. Well.... most can't.... So true. Even if they couldn't PM mods and admin, they'd go straight for e-mailing Skip. That's probably why he decided for mods. haha Perhaps "false reporting" should be added to the guidelines here. So if you call somebody a "faggot" and then report them for calling you a "douche bag" you can be banned for wasting mod time with false complaints? Sure it would need to be a little more in depth than that, but you get the idea. :cheers2: Edit: Or just make it clear that repeated use of the report button for no reason qualifies as harassment and can result in banning. Just sayin'...
You ain't a noob unless you act like one. I wouldn't think it matters if someone else respects a person where you don't because the only way we could know that is if we have a huge conversation about it. Not only that but it can change quite quickly, for example after reading this thread I've gained respect for several people. I'm very sorry to admit but I've never reported a post. I don't get the whole trolling thing so I never do it for that [except for Ivy!] and I wouldn't report a post in a situation with other people because generally it's something that is resolved by themselves. Same. :cheers2:
