i agree. as soon as your personal beliefs conflict with another's safety, there's a problem.

on a somewhat related note: is anyone else tired of all these random disease scares? it's like, christ. a new virus kills 90 people globally over the course of a couple months. i bet more people were strangled with osh kosh overalls during that period of time.

    i think she was joking

I've heard polio is also making a comeback. A lot of people forget that some of these diseases are alive and well in 3rd world countries...

My own shots are up to date, I think. They poked me for tetanus when I took my son in for his update.

    We don't get flu shots.

I let my children catch chicken pox instead of vaccinating. I don't trust new vaccines that don't have enough info.
If everyone around you has been vaccinated for Tetanus, it won't help you...

I agree. People should be allowed to die from whatever Victorian diseases they want to.

they just put the disease in you with the vaccination so your body fights against it. No thanks, plus the different diseases are always mutating so one vaccination wont help.

My children are vaxed, but I was really, really torn about having it done. I did a lot of research beforehand. Basically I was afraid of reactions due to the family history of allergies and whatnot, as well as mercury poisioning, risk of Autism, and various other potential complications.

Anyway, I honestly do not believe that vaccinations should be mandatory for a child to attend school. I believe it should be the choice of the parents. Unfortunately, the government thinks it's their job to dictate just about everything in life. ;)

Oh, and as a side note, not sure if this was brought up yet or not, but at my childrens' school the Chicken Pox vaccine became manadatory several years ago. I was infuriated when they instituted that one. I had been going by my pediatrician's advice to let the children be naturally exposed to it, just as I had, my husband, and generations beforehand, but I had to have all three of them given the vaccination. My oldest son ended up getting Chicken Pox even WITH the vax. A mild case, but still.

That's one of the problems with groups that use the truther approach. They mistakingly think they've made an argument based on a compilation of selective brief quotes that cosmetically stacks the cards in their favor. Then they claim that the burden is on others to refute them when they haven't even made an argument in the first place.

One could just as easily 'prove' that bombs were secretly planted in the WTC by quote mining as many people as possible who used the word 'explosion' in their description of the WTC collapse and then say 'who cares about how it was compiled; facts are facts; prove me wrong'.

Some of the truther sites have become a giant mish-mosh of quote mines gathered from many other unrelated sites.

HIV/AIDS denialist Duesberg also does a good job of deceiving people with his quote mining of the publications of other researchers. It's fortunate that ordinary people on the web and in the research community invest a large amount of their own time uncovering the deceptiveness of people like Trudeau and Duesberg.

Websites that are posting Trudeau's compilation of quotes should be including his name when referencing it. He selectively quoted sentences from particular papers with the intent to make vaccinations appear as negative as possible and to shape public opinion to his liking. If the websites aren't referencing his name when they use his list, then they are too lazy or careless to document their sources, they are deliberately being deceptive, or they are ashamed that the list came from Trudeau.

Some of the problem of vaccination denialists stems from their lack of real world experience and not having seen diseases firsthand. People who have been in sheltered lifestyles in countries with a high standard of health care think that these illnesses have been fully eradicated when in fact they haven't.

The mindset is along the lines of the few HIV/AIDS denialist ringleaders who are in academic ivory towers demanding increasingly stringent proof that HIV is the cause of AIDS. Most of them have no experience in the real world treating the illness. For some of them, denialism is an exercise in amusement and gratification of their egos.

So to the people that feel that vaccinations should be mandatory... if they make it mandatory for everyone to be vaccinated for the H1N9 virus, then would you agree to this?
