I decided to look for scholarly articles about Mckenna's Stoned Ape theory after seeing DoctaWatson's thread. Haven't found much yet, but I did come across an article / interview with Mckenna published in Omni (never heard of that publication before, what's the deal? Is it still around?) and saw this:

Which is the way I think it should be. I find this way of approaching the drugs to be alive and well on forums such as this, but then again this place is anything but a representative sample. What place--if any--do you think this attitude has in the 'drug culture' as a whole today?

Before I tripped the first time, I read a lot of issues of the Psychedelic Review, writings by Ram Dass, Andrew Weil, Tim Leary, the thoughts of Jerry Garcia ("Signposts To Inner Space"), and the Lazy Man's Guide to Enlightenment. I wanted to know what I was getting into.

Almost all of my trips have been one of two different kinds.

Most of them have been spiritual explorations where I take a fairly large dose of mushrooms or acid and stay inside with a friend or two and get a taste of enlightenment.

The rest have been musically oriented, mostly Grateful Dead concerts.

But you know, I've always been quite private about my trips. Over 35 years of tripping, I've only done it with four other people, I think. So, I really don't know shit about "today's drug culture". I just know that I still have the same, fairly serious, attitude and approach I've always have.

Yeah exactly I can't speak about drug culture attitudes, i'm not a sociologist doing a study, but i can speak of my own values, and they started out immature and have developed maturely.

exactly. leave the documenation and reports to the tists. most of us always have an ethic. its always usually part of the person itself. thats one of the cool parts about psychedelics, it cant just be a "fad". once youve tried it, you get a taste of your own world. its just another thing on the planet. but of course. if you ask us questions or we have an extremelly unique trip, then im sure you will find it on the forums. but if you want to see the documents or reports. look to the big boys, Rick strassman, garcia..etc or become a tist yourself. =] most of us are all scientists of our own world honestly. but for most of us. documenting and reporting just seems to be either a personal thing or just somthing that doesnt need done at the moment.

could go on for hours. gonna stop there. =]
