My 15 yr old cat's breath has started to really stink recently; every time she licks herself on my lap i get a stench of her sickening saliva! She also seems to be in pain; she bats my hand away when i try touching anywhere near her mouth. Having managed to pin her down yesterday i opened her mouth and spotted a rotton looking tooth. Firstly, do you think a trip to the vets is needed or will it naturally fall out or heal? Secondly, do you think I should change her diet? At the moment she's on sachets of the meaty stuff in gravy or jelly, maybe I should start feeding her cat biscuits aswell? I've never had this problem before with my other cats, and all of them were fed the same diet she's on. ah well, any advice apreiciated
I've had cats all my life and I never had one with bad teeth until now. She has lost both fang teeth and one in the back. Two were pulled, one fang tooth fell out. She had tarter, bad! I don't think my cat was eating wellbecause of it. I had always fed her hard food and I think she couldn't eat it. Nnow she gets wet food and is putting on some weight. It is worthy of a trip to the vet, yes, and yes, it will be expensive.
"Problems in the mouth can not only be quite painful, causing some cats to refuse to eat, but oral infections can also "seed" other parts of the body with harmful microorganisms and cause life-threatening infections. Most problems in the mouth can be managed sucessfully if they are caught early enough. Signs of oral disease, which may include particularly bad breath, drooling and difficulty eating, should prompt a visit to your vet." I took that paragraph out of my book on cats..... it's good to feed your pets crunchy food as well as the soft food they are getting because it keeps their teeth strong. If you have anymore specific questions I might be able to look something up in my book...it has everything. Good luck to your kitty
i have hygeine food for my cats that she loves to death, supposed to give her 2 a day but i usually giving 10 or so by the end of the day...
thanks for all the advice! your book, elle, made it sound like way to much of a risk to wait for it to drop out or dissapear. So I guess we'll be popping off to the vets again... it's just soo expensive
