Idk it's hard to say, take the Renaissance for example, much of that was religion based, often the reformation of religion. While on the flip side religion had almost nothing to do with Europe falling into the dark ages(well a bit, but when it comes down to it not that much) so it could be argued Christianity helped a great deal towards out modern culture
I suppose you could make that argument but it doesn't carry much weight considering the church didn't pardon galileo until 17 years ago and many christians STILL disbelieve in darwinian evolution.
