You're probably too young to remember this too... Tryptophan - contamination linked to Eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome epidemic http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1585/is_n12_v15/ai_8995066/ Tryptophan. One year ago a mysterious new illness appeared in New Mexico. Aching in the muscles was the dominant symptom, but the condition was distinctive because one type of white blood cell, the eosinophil, was present at three to several hundred times the normal level (see the Health Letter, February 1990). In subsequent months the number of cases reported in the United States rose to more than 1,500, and a few surfaced in Canada as well.... ...Eosinophilia-myalgia appears to be a serious disease; one-third of the known patients suffering from it have had to be hospitalized, and about two dozen have died. But there is a great deal of variability in the severity of the illness and the damage it does. In addition to muscle pain, patients may have rashes or itching, hair loss, cough or shortness of breath, swelling of the extremities or face, enlargement of the liver, derangement of peripheral nerve function, joint pain with eventual contracture of knees and elbows, or mild anemia. All sale of manufactured tryptophan has been stopped in the United States pending resolution of this problem. Few new cases of eosinophilia-myalgia are expected. But most existing cases appear to be slow to improve after tryptophan consumption is stopped. ZW
Actually there is not near enough tryptophan in turkey to make you sleepy. It's all the food at thanksgiving that makes you sleepy. Another myth busted. read this: http://www.ehso.com/ehshome/FoodSafety/foodtryptophan.php
